Rebel Finance School Methodology: The Step-by-Step Framework for Taking Control of Your Money
Most people are not failing with money because they are stupid. They are struggling because they were never taught how money actually works.
Instead, most of us were handed the standard life plan: get good grades, get a good job, buy as big a house as possible, get married, have kids, buy a bigger house, upgrade the car, upgrade the kitchen, upgrade the holidays, and spend the spare cash every time life improves.
Then, decades later, people look around and wonder where all the money went.
This is not a personal failure. It is a financial education failure.
The standard life plan teaches people how to look successful on the outside, but it rarely teaches them how to build lasting wealth, create freedom, or prepare properly for retirement. That matters because millions of people are now heading towards a retirement they are not financially ready for. Pensions Age reported Scottish Widows research showing that 15.3 million people in the UK are at risk of retirement poverty, with 39% not on track for even a minimum retirement lifestyle.
This is why Rebel Finance School exists.
Rebel Finance School is a free, no-upsell financial education programme created by Alan and Katie Donegan. It helps ordinary people take control of money through mindset, maths, behaviour change and simple investing.
As of 29 May 2026, Rebel Finance School has helped 81,103 people from 91 countries take control of their money.
The Rebel Finance School methodology works because it does not start with investing. It starts with the human being.
Before we talk about funds, platforms, pensions or tax wrappers, we help people understand where they are, what they believe about money, where their money is going, what is getting in the way, and how to build a repeatable process for financial freedom.
Because wealth is not just luck. It can be a process. And Rebel Finance School teaches that process step by step.
We did it, we followed a simple process that created outsized results in our lives and now we are evangelical about sharing that with other people…
What Is the Rebel Finance School Methodology?
The Rebel Finance School methodology is a step-by-step financial education framework that helps people understand where they are, change how they think about money, create a gap between income and spending, get out of expensive debt, invest simply, and work towards financial freedom.
It combines plain-English teaching, practical tools, mindset work, behaviour change, community support, simple investing principles, humour and absolutely no shame. This is not about becoming a finance geek overnight. It is about building confidence one step at a time.
The aim is not to tell people exactly what to do with their money, we can’t as we aren’t qualified financial advisors! The aim is to help people understand enough to make their own decisions with more confidence, clarity and control.
Why Rebel Finance School Does Not Start With Investing

Our answer is usually: hold your horses.
Before you invest, you need to understand yourself, your numbers, your beliefs, your behaviour and your plan. If you skip the foundations, you might invest in something you do not understand, panic when the market drops, pay high fees, stay trapped in expensive debt, or sabotage your own progress because your identity and behaviour are not aligned with your goals.
How did we learnt o do this? Because we ran sessions jumping straight into investing and saw how they failed most people!
That is why Rebel Finance School follows a deliberate sequence. We do not start with products. We start with people.
The Rebel Finance School Map to Financial Freedom
The Rebel Financial Freedom Map is one way we show that journey. It starts with your why, then guides you through the next tiny step: creating a positive gap, building financial safety, attacking expensive debt, investing simply, staying consistent and working towards freedom.

The 10-Step Rebel Finance School Framework
Too long; didn’t read summary. Below is the full information about each of the steps in the methodology or use this quick guide overview!
The Rebel Finance School Methodology at a Glance
The Rebel Finance School methodology does not start with products, platforms or pensions. It starts with the human being, then builds the financial foundations step by step.
Start With the Human Being
Before spreadsheets or investing, we help people face fear, shame, avoidance and old money stories with curiosity instead of judgement.
Mind the Gap
The foundation is the gap between what you earn and what you spend. A positive gap creates choices, safety and freedom.
Know Your Net Worth
Your net worth is your financial “you are here” marker. It shows what you own, what you owe and what you are building.
Change Your Money Mindset
Money is never just maths. Identity, beliefs, values, behaviour and environment all affect the financial results you create.
Understand Debt and Compounding
Compounding can work for you through investing or against you through expensive debt. The methodology helps you turn the force around.
Talk About Money
Money conversations move from awkward and avoided to powerful, playful and productive when people start with understanding.
Learn Investing Foundations
Before choosing investments, we teach the language: assets, liabilities, speculation, diversification, volatility and risk.
Invest Simply
The core investing approach is simple, low-cost, globally diversified and designed to avoid stock picking, market timing and high fees.
Use Platform, Account, Fund
Investing becomes clearer when you separate the three decisions: where it is held, how it is taxed and what you are buying.
Plan for Financial Freedom
Retirement is treated as a target, not an age. The goal is more choice over your time, work, energy and life.
1. Start With the Human Being
Before we touch spreadsheets, pensions or investing, we start with the person. People arrive at Rebel Finance School with real fears. They worry they are not good with money, that they do not know enough, that they are too old, that they are too far behind, that they are scared to look, or that their partner is not on board.
The first shift is simple but powerful: add the word “yet”. I am not good with money yet. I do not understand investing yet. I do not have a plan yet.
That tiny word opens the door to possibility. It helps people move from “this will never work for me” to “how might this work for me?” That shift matters because you get to keep the problems you argue for. If you fight hard enough for your limitations, you usually get to keep them.
2. Mind the Gap
The foundation of Rebel Finance School is the gap between what you earn and what you spend. If you spend less than you earn, you have a positive gap. If you spend everything you earn, you have a zero gap. If you spend more than you earn, you have a negative gap.
A positive gap is power because it gives you choices. It allows you to build an emergency fund, pay off debt, invest, and buy back your freedom over time. Without a gap, the rest of the financial freedom journey becomes much harder.
This is why the first practical step is not picking an investment. It is working out where your money actually goes. Not roughly. Actually. There is no shame and no judgement in this process. It is just data, and data gives you the power to make better decisions.

3. Know Your Net Worth
Once you know where your money is going, the next step is to work out what you already have. Your net worth is your financial “you are here” marker. Like the blue dot on Google Maps, it shows where you are starting from.
In Rebel Finance School, we split net worth into useful categories. Your freedom fund is money invested in assets that can help buy your freedom. Valuable liabilities are things with value that cost you money to own, such as the home you live in or a car. Cash and planned spending are the money you hold for emergencies and known future costs. Debt is the money you owe.
The whole purpose it to be able to visualise the split of your net-worth so you can see what you have to look after yourself in retirement!
This helps people stop obsessing over income and start looking at what they actually keep. Wealth is not how much you earn. Wealth is what you keep, what you build and what eventually gives you options.
4. Change Your Money Mindset
Money is never just maths. It is identity, beliefs, fear, values, family stories, old mistakes, status, safety and emotion. That is why Rebel Finance School includes mindset work as a core part of the methodology.
We look at your goals, identity, values, beliefs, skills, behaviours and environment. If your goal is financial freedom but your identity is “I am terrible with money”, you are going to feel pulled in two directions. The work is to bring those parts into alignment so that who you believe you are supports where you want to go.
When something challenges you, we invite you to lean in and say, “Fascinating.” Not “I am wrong.” Not “they are attacking me.” Just, “Fascinating. What can I learn here?” That tiny pause can turn defensiveness into curiosity, and curiosity is where change begins.
5. Understand Compounding and Debt
Compounding is one of the most powerful forces in personal finance because it can work for you or against you. When you invest, compounding helps your money make money, and then that money makes more money. We sometimes call these “money babies”, because why make finance more boring than it needs to be?
When you are in expensive debt, compounding works the other way. The interest grows, the debt grows, and your financial boat gets more holes in it. This is why the Rebel Finance School process is to create a gap, build a starter emergency fund, pay off expensive debt, increase your emergency fund, and then invest in assets.
Debt is not a moral failure. Debt is a symptom. We do not use debt as a stick to beat people with. We use it as information, then build a plan to move forward.
Paying off debt all starts with the Debt Attack Strategy that Katie created.
That’s the first 5 weeks of the course and the start of the Rebel Finance School Methodology….
6. Learn to Talk About Money
Money is one of the biggest taboo subjects in the world. People avoid talking about it with partners, parents, children, friends and even themselves, but your financial life does not exist in isolation.
Rebel Finance School teaches people how to move money conversations from awkward and avoided to powerful, playful and productive. The key is not to start by telling people what to do. No-one ever one over their family by creaming “you must track your spending!” The key is to start by understanding.
Questions are powerful. What did your parents teach you about money? What does wealth mean to you? Have you ever worried about running out of money? What would financial freedom look like for you? What do you wish we did differently with money?
Alignment beats arguments. When mistakes happen, the process is not to punish forever or pretend nothing happened. The process is to forgive, learn and change.
Good communication is at the heart of a healthy relationship with money and each other.
7. Learn Investing Foundations
By the time we get to investing, people are usually desperate to know what to buy. Hold your horses! Before we answer that, we teach the language. What is an asset? What is a liability? What is speculation? What is diversification? What is volatility? What is risk?
Finance can feel like a foreign language, and the finance industry often profits from that confusion. So we slow it down and explain the important words in plain English.
An asset is something that earns you money by owning it. A liability is something that costs you money by owning it. Speculation is buying something and hoping someone else will pay more for it later.
That simple distinction changes how people see cars, houses, gold, crypto, wine, individual shares, rental properties and index funds. Once you understand the language, you can start making decisions with less fear and more clarity.
People nod when you say “the stock market has gone up” but no one really knows what the stock market even is. We have to start at the beginning to help people truly understand what they are doing.
8. Invest Simply
The Rebel Finance School investing philosophy is deliberately simple. Do not try to pick the winners. Do not try to time the market. Do not pay high fees. Do not make it weird.
For most people, the core idea is to invest in a simple, low-cost, globally diversified index fund, inside the most tax-efficient account available to them. The details vary by country, but the thinking framework is the same.
We talk a lot about the Vanguard FTSE Global All cap in the UK and the Vanguard Total Market Fund (VT) globally.
When evaluating existing pensions, funds and investments the two most important questions are: what is it invested in, and what are the fees? Or, even shorter: funds and fees.
Fees matter because fees destroy compounding. The lower your fees, the more of your money stays invested and working for you. This is not about chasing exciting investments. It is about building a boring, robust system that can work quietly in the background while you get on with living your life.
AT the core of the philosophy is “investing like a dead person”. You invest your money into a simple global index fund and leave it. Ignore all the media noise, hype and fear and go on with living your life.
9. Use the Platform, Account, Fund Framework
A lot of investing confusion comes from mixing up three different decisions. At Rebel Finance School, we separate them into platform, account and fund.
The fund is what you are buying. The account is how it is taxed. The platform is where it is held.
For example, an ISA is not an investment. It is an account. Vanguard is not an investment. It is a platform or provider. A global index fund is the actual thing you are buying.
Once people understand those three layers, investing becomes far less confusing. It might not feel easy overnight, but it becomes understandable. And understandable is the first step to doable.
10. Plan for Financial Freedom
In the Rebel Finance School methodology, retirement is not treated as a fixed age handed down by society. It is treated as a target you can calculate, work towards and adjust as your life changes.
We teach people how to estimate how much they might need, how their freedom rate affects the journey, how the 25-times rule and 4% rule work, and why flexibility is one of the most powerful tools in retirement planning.
The goal is not to build a giant pile of money for the sake of it. The goal is to create more choice over your time, your work, your energy and your life.
We don’t subscribe to the enforced RE (Retire early) part of the FIRE movement. If you love the work you do then keep doing it but with financial freedom it becomes optional and with the ability to do it on your terms.
Financial freedom is not really about money. Money is just the tool. The deeper goal is to give yourself more options, more security and more ability to live in line with what matters to you.
Why the Order Matters
The order of the Rebel Finance School methodology matters because you cannot build a stable financial future on shaky foundations. Awareness comes before optimisation. Mindset comes before behaviour change. The gap comes before investing. Debt comes before wealth building. Communication comes before long-term consistency. Investing principles come before product choices. Retirement maths comes before retirement panic.
If you dial the numbers in the wrong order, you do not get the result you wanted. Personal finance works the same way.
This is why Rebel Finance School is structured as a journey rather than a pile of random money tips on YouTube or in an article. Each step prepares you for the next one, and the sequence helps people build confidence instead of overwhelm.
What Makes the Rebel Finance School Methodology Different?
Rebel Finance School is not normal financial education. It is completely free, has no upsells, uses plain English, includes practical tools, and is built around the core principle that we all have different starting points. Starting at the very beginning is critical to helping people understand the financial choices in front of them!
We challenge people, but we do it from a place of love. We use humour, stories, pop culture, spreadsheets, calculators, community support and real-life examples because people learn better when they feel safe enough to keep going.
The methodology is focused on behaviour change, not just information. Knowing what to do is useful, but actually doing it is what changes your life. That is why Rebel Finance School combines the numbers, the mindset, the tools, the conversations and the community.
We are not here to tell you exactly what to do. We are here to help you understand enough to make your own decisions. That distinction matters because nobody is coming to save you. Not a financial adviser. Not the government. Not us. But you are far more capable than you think, and with the right process, support and tools, you can make extraordinary progress.
It Is Built on How People Actually Learn
Rebel Finance School is deliberately designed around how people actually learn. We do not assume that giving someone more facts will automatically change their behaviour. If information alone worked, everyone who had ever read a personal finance article would already be sorted.
The pedagogy behind Rebel Finance School is built on sequencing, repetition, emotional safety and action. We use plain English, stories, humour, calculators, community discussion and tiny practical steps to help people understand money and actually do something different with it.
That is why the course uses repeated phrases and frameworks such as “Mind the Gap”, “don’t compare your pineapples”, “hold your horses”, “funds and fees”, “time in the market is more important than timing the market”, and “platform, account, fund”. These are memory hooks that help people remember and use complex financial ideas in real life.
Each week prepares people for the next step, so they are not thrown into investing before they understand their spending, net worth, beliefs, debt, relationships and risk. The result is a methodology that combines education, behaviour change and emotional resilience, rather than simply delivering financial facts and hoping people work out what to do next.
