The Journey Begins: Writing a Book in Ten Days
Have you ever had a burning idea that you just HAVE to share? You know it will help people and you want EVERYONE to know! You think to yourself “this would make an awesome book!”
But then it comes down to writing it… and we all know how that part goes.
It can be almost impossible to find the time, the focus and the energy to write it and get it out to the world.
Maybe for you it isn’t a book. Maybe it’s a different kind of creative project or something you’ve been meaning to get round to like learning a language or decluttering the room where everything gets dumped.
In my case, I knew that I had a book to write.
Katie and I sat down and wrote the outline together and then Katie planned to go on a retreat for 10 days on her own. My window opened and I started to wonder is it possible to write a book in ten days?
Tropical inspiration
I booked a trip to Koh Samui, a Thai island, where I was going to write the book. I chose somewhere where I knew no one at all (no distractions) and thought to myself “now is the time!”
The writing marathon
About 6 months previously, we had gathered a group of amazing friends together to help us with ideas for a book. We knew we wanted to write a book about helping people with their money, we just didn’t know exactly what! We came up with an idea that leant into our love of superheroes: you are the hero of your own story and finances.
I already had the book outline so when I got to the island it felt like I just had to fill in the blanks. After 4 years of running Rebel Finance School, the message was already in my bones and just needed to pour out.
Every morning I woke up and went for a run and then to a café where I wrote for 2-4 hours. I stopped for a break, worked out in the gym and then continued to write for another couple of hours before running out of steam.
Have you ever had a Thai massage? The traditional Thai massages are out of this world so I would stop again and have a break and then go for dinner and write late into the evening. I was so inspired and felt like every word I wrote was talking directly to you.
Writing 8 hours a day meant the book took shape very quickly and by the end of the ten days I had a first draft. A full book.
Here is what writing a book looked like for me! Many breakfasts, coffee and inspirational views!
Current Phase: Editing and Refining
The book was written and then it sat there for a while. Have you ever had a giant project that you wanted to do but the size put you off? I thought about editing it and ended up avoiding it for a while.
Yes, I am human too. Sometimes I look at the size of a project and make an excuse to do something easier first.
Eventually I found the energy and said to myself “This has to happen”. We decided to hire an editor to help us push the book over the line and to make it the best possible version it could be for you. I love writing but I am well aware of my limitations which are grammar, speeling and more.
Polishing the gem
The fabulous Tracy agreed to help us edit the book and we are currently deep in the editing phase. She has made notes, torn it to shreds and we are making huge progress putting it back together. I am so excited to share it with you when it is ready!
Your input matters
This book is for you. I took everything that Katie and I have learnt about money, working with each other and helping over 30,000 people in 40 countries with their finances and condensed it into a book for you!

Get involved: help us shape the final product
When we first came up with the idea of the book an incredible group of people helped us. The book focus and ideas wouldn’t be the way they are without them. No project is a solo project!
This book is no different and we would love your help shaping the final project.
How can you help? Besides reading the book we would love some help with:
- Choosing the title – watch out for the next blog post to vote on the title. Yes it was easier to write the book than choose the title!
- Selecting the cover design – coming soon in a blog post and 99design competition
- Beta readers – as the book nears the final edit we will need some proof readers to tell us what they think and spot things
- Writing reviews – the more reviews we have before the book even launches, the further it will go
- Helping share the message – we want the book to reach and help as many people as possible

Pricing and finances
Yes we are going to charge for the book. So far we have already spent several thousand pounds on producing the book, editing the book and on graphic design. The total cost of producing the book is going to be somewhere around £5,000 in total.
BUT!
The whole purpose of writing the book is to spread the message of financial independence and to help as many people as possible. We want everyone to be able to afford it and to afford to gift it to the people you care about.
With that in mind we are going to set an affordable price and then any profit we make from book sales over the years is going to be used to run Rebel Finance School and further financial education around the world.
We will use any resources the book brings in to do more, create more and have more impact. We would love to know what you think of this. This is the part we have been thinking a HUGE amount about so if you have comments, thoughts, ideas we would LOVE to know them! Please put them in the comments on this article for us.

You are both amazing this has helped me plan my future. I had 90k sitting in a savings account for 2 years not knowing how to invest. I will buy 3 for my adult children. I started at week at week 1 and was enthralled from the off, eager to get through it, I did it everyday and when getting to week 6, I was captivated. We have lots in place, and have transferred pensions to Vanguard. Now to have a meeting with the bank as from fact sheet we are in 37% bonds and 11% in ‘others’ ! The remainder in stocks.
You have truly changed my life. Or rather our lives.

Congratulations! The book is such a big deal! I love your mission and I loved the course, which I completed just a week ago, but as I was taking it I wondered what percent of excited future rebels actually finished it. After all it took weeks and hours. The book is the answer- packing your immense knowledge into a smaller and much more digestible format will make a huge difference for those who can not take a long course while for those who did, like me, it will be a perfect refresher and solidifier of all main concepts. I also love the idea that you will use the book proceeds to offset the operational costs of running the Rebel School. Cheers for the reply. Really cool that you are so involved in the community. My FI journey is progressing, though not always as speedily as it could do. Having said that, my wife and I HAVE now reached a point that if we don’t ever contribute another penny to our investments, we will still be able to retire at 65, so I am proud of that. It’s just, neither of us want to work that long and having jobs is not fulfilling in a way it seems to be for others!
I have been meaning to get on your rebel business school course (will do in the new year when my child goes to nursery full time). I have always been terrible at both 1) making my own money and 2) keeping a job. Obviously that needs to change! I teach English for a living and I am finding it very difficult to eke out a living online.

Hi Guys, good luck with the book. Having spoken to a few self publishers I can appreciate the efforts needed to go from initial concept to publishing.
With respect to pricing, why don’t you try to offer bulk discounted sales to financial institutions so they can distribute amongst their staff/customers. They could add personal messages/fliers within the book.
Also happy to beta read if required. I’ve read a lot of financial/mindset books in the last 40 years!

Hi, great news about the book! Whilst I’m totally digital savvy and love IT, I hope the book has a physical option for me to buy, have on my bookshelf on my (real) zoom background, for my friends to see when they browse my bookcase when they visit me for dinner, to hold in my hand physically and to be able to grab in an instant to lend to a friend or family member.
Knowing me, I’ll probably also use a digital option too!

Wow, you guys are truly amazing and totally deserving of the King’s award. I completed the RFS this year and will sign up for next year’s course. I’ve opened two small Vanguard index funds plus one for my granddaughter and I am particularly impressed with her 5.24% increase in 7 weeks. I’m trying to get my head around my two funds before taking the plunge and transferring my expensively managed portfolio. I have SIPP Vanguard LifeStrategy fund 80/20 and ISA 100/00 and need to rebalance into 100 stocks. Thinking of adding a USA fund 100/00 for new SIPP contributions – what do you recommend? Cannot sell existing SIPP funds as will be taxed by HMRC. My age is 60. Retire at 67.
Also, where are your meet-ups in May and June? Would love to meet you both. I live in Devon.

Couple of questions. Did you know that the LifeStrategy Funds whether they are stocks or not are very heavily UK focused 20% plus home country bias? Why do you think there are tax implications on changing funds in your SIPP? Normally there are no tax implications inside but only when you take it out to live off

Amazing idea to write a book. I too am trying to ‘eat that frog’ (my frog is a course with many, many assignments!). Would you consider releasing an audiobook version? There are lots of people who would listen to it, not just people with sight impairments. BorrowBox is an app you sign up to through your library where you can listen to audiobooks for free – maybe explore that with the librarian who commented above?
Keep doing your incredible work! I’ve wanted to invest for many years but found the idea of picking the right stocks at the right time and all of the jargon so daunting. After watching your course and the ‘how to open a Vanguard account’ video last year I finally dipped my toe into passive index investing and haven’t looked back! Thank you!

Just a thought a discussion was had where the person was a skeptic and stated they are paid commission from Vanguard, they don’t do this for nothing, they get paid via social media, etc etc even after explanation is given they have another restrictive thought process to which I say: and how does this serve you well?
Would you consider a section in the book of how you have personally been at a loss financially in money you’ve outplayed to do this course provision and how you managed that loss.

I also love the idea of having your book as a ‘book club’ kind of book where we gather (people within my community) and discuss parts of the book. I love the word FREEDOM as these title with one of those little subtitle bits underneath… maybe linking in with being your own hero, but im fascinated about the titles you have been brainstorming!

I have been following you for the past three years and love the way you communicate your dream to so many. For me it has been particularly insightful as I am an emotional spender and just beginning your journey. For me it’s possibly too late for financial freedom, but at 76 I want to leave my finances in a good state to pass on to my three children. It would be lovely if u could maybe have a session or even part of one focusing on your elderly followers who may have missed the boat in more formative years but woken up to your reality and now mine too , with if I’m lucky another 10 years left.

Hello Alan and Katie , I finally got round to watching your finance school content on YouTube having had it recommended so many times on the teaching groups I’m on and I’d just like to say how much I loved it . I can’t think of anyone else who would hold my attention for 20 hours without me becoming bored or feeling patronised. At 51 I’m feeling inspired and am going to create a freedom fund ! I was really scared and avoidant of all the financial stuff but your lovely presenting style has calmed me down . So thank you !
