How do you choose a book to read?
As you skim the shelves in your favourite book shop how do you decide if you’ll buy? Do you look at the title and the cover and think “that looks fun” and then read the description?
Or do you have a different strategy?
Personally, I skim the shelves and read the titles to see if they capture my attention. If the title is good then I read the tag line. If it still has my attention I flip the book over and read the back cover.
This is my purchase decision point. If the title, cover, tagline and blurb all look good I part with my cash.
If I am still unsure then maybe I have a look at the table of contents before buying.
Based on my strategy the cover and title are absolutely critical! Is it the same for you?
Help us decide
It has become time to choose a book title for our upcoming finance book. We are struggling to make a decision. Maybe you can help!?
We have spent countless hours brainstorming titles and tag lines and we have a shortlist but choosing is proving impossible right now. Please help!

Ruth the Happy Saver did give us some book ideas:
- Your rental property probably sucks. Here’s Plan B.😆
- Rich and free: be like me 😆
- Skoda Citigo got us where we needed to go 😆
We are unsure about these title ideas, maybe you can come up with better?
Once we have a title we can move on to cover design, blurbs and more. But without a title we are stuck!
As you read the list of titles below I would love you to think for each one “Would I buy this book for myself or as a gift for someone else?” Not whether you like the title, but whether you would part with your hard earned cash to buy it!
Maybe you read the title and it intrigues you enough to want to know more?
Or you can say in the comments on this article that you hate all the titles and suggest something completely different. If you want more context about the book and who it is for then read on below.
Some of the titles might challenge or even offend some people. We want to get the book noticed and read so that we can reach as many people as possible. That is the mission!
I can hear you thinking “Enough setup Alan, tell me what the titles are!” Well here they are. Let me know which one would make you hit purchase.

What’s the book about?
The book is based on the content of Rebel Finance School and puts all the course ideas and lessons into easy-to-follow missions that build to make you the hero of your own financial journey.

I wanted to write a book that inspired people to know that they can take charge of their financial destiny and create the life of their dreams. I get so inspired by the thought that you are the star of your own story. You are the hero you need. As Katie likes to say on the Rebel Finance School course “no one is coming to save you; you have to save yourself!”
This is the financial independence book we wished we’d had when we started. It is our guide to doing what we did that allowed us to retire at 35 and 40 respectively. You might not be able to retire at the same ages we did but you can set yourself up for a bright financial future!
What’s next? From title to cover
Thank you for helping us choose a title. This unlocks EVERYTHING. From here we can work on the cover design, the blurbs and the marketing materials and get everything ready to launch.
Our plan is to have the book ready to launch in March and then come back to the UK to do a book tour / meetups all around the country in April and May!
Please let us know your thoughts in the comments. Whatever they are.
Sending you peace and pineapples
Alan and Katie
PS the photo was taken last week in Hobbiton on the Great Pie Tour of New Zealand. Wow this is a beautiful country and we have had so much fun here! Visit if you ever get the chance.

After every single Rebel Finance School session in 2025, Katie and I sat down and wrote notes about what we could improve for next time. We had a lot of ideas. But here’s the thing we’ve learned the hard way over the years: our ideas are not as important as what actually works for real [...]

I feel Rebel should be part of the book title.
Salim, thank you and I think you are 100% right. It is what it is all about. Thank you for replying! Alan
I can’t see the end of the book titles but a mix of the 6th and 7th sound good to me. Thanks for your great work. You have helped me tremendously.
Trevor, sorry the title thing didn’t work properly. BOO. Here is a link that works on mobile if you want to see them properly! Mobile friendly version. Sending happiness and thank you so much for replying. Alan
Hello, congratulations!
I cant wait to buy this! (Multiple copies!).
There is a lot of FI lit that puts me off because it sounds braggy or USA centric.
Also many people don’t necessary need or want FIRE, but as you say yourself want FI to free them to make their personal choices.
Assuming the book follows the same lines as the course, i personally think the strap line should indicate your AMAZING goals of educating/learning how to understand key financial terminology (pensions, compounding, interest rates), understanding your finances (measure, budget), understaning/working together as a couple, creating a gap ideas (large and small), budgetting, saving for the future, investments. I think you should capitalise on the growing Rebel Finance brand name which in turn the book will support.
Rebel Finance: learn to understand, control and improve your finances.
Or is the book aimed at people who already aim for FIRE?
I’d be happy to help in any way. I can… pre read and feedback. My husband is an excellent copy checker for spelling, grammar etc.
Online sales (or even in book shops) I always check reviews. Not just the number of stars but what people say is the substance of the book.
Hope you are well. Love what you do!
Katie xx
Love the work you do guys – a book is a great idea!
For me personally I just want to live a comfortable life so I would say Financial Independence is about reaching your own personal goals and living the life that you want to live. Sorry was unable to see all of the titles.
Hey Barbara, you are so so right. That is exactly hat it is all about. Getting to where you want to go and having the financial resources to live the life you want to live. Thank you so much for replying and I am so sorry about the title thing. it was super annoying it didn’t show up properly. Here is a link if you are curious that will work on mobile:
Bout tie folks!
Love what you’re doing. Finding people who have done your practical course all over the shop, from all walks of life!
Have a chapter on what to do before the end of the tax year eg use your ISA /pension etc limits
Can’t wait to see what’s next from you and the team
Debo, what a lovely reply. lol. I know we have been slow getting to it. We have too much fun working on the course lol!
Good shout on the ISA and Pension limits. Love it. Sending you happiness. Alan
I love Katie’s suggestion: Rebel Finance: learn to understand, control and improve your finances. Also the goals she outlines.
The blurb could also flag that this will help you no matter how old you are and where you’re starting from.
Like Katie, I think your audience is broader than FIRE.
Are you in touch with Martin Lewis? You should be. Write and get on his show at launch time! Also BBC Breakfast. Woman’s Hour. Lorraine. Get your list together and get writing.
Good luck!
Dorothy
Dorothy what a fabulous reply. THANK YOU. Love that. Katie had some amazing ideas didn’t she. And you are right, we are trying to go broader than FIRE and almost that is a side affect of good finance practice rather than the aim LOVE IT.
Martin lewis we need to find a way to get on his radar. I messaged about 10 people in his organisation this summer to get to know them and never heard back from a single one of them. I am going to have to get on that again and message them all!
THANK YOU. I have written down your ideas and will work on it! Sending happiness. Alan
I like this comment a lot. Financial freedom or independence seems out of reach for many of us who are starting late, but we’ve gained so much from your course. You want these people to buy your books too because, despite starting later, they could improve their financial situation.
Best of luck, and if you ever think of translating it into Spanish, I would be very pleased to help!
Lorena x
Lorena, I know what you mean. it is that fine line of making it aspirational and also not going too far so it is off putting. you are awesome and YES YES YES. We want to reach latin America next and do far more. We really want to reach the people of Latin America that we LOVE so much. Alan
Phone doesn’t like site…. so voting here… title suggestion ” The rebel road to fi-dom: a new hope”… obviously part of a trilogy book to the rebels strike back part three return of the rebels.
Keith, so annoying that it didn’t work on mobile. SORRY. Love the starwars references. That made me smile so much. Genius! The Rebel Road to Fi-dom! brilliant. How are you? Sending happiness. Alan
Looking forward to the book release well done 👏.
Thanks Lee! Sending you MUCH happiness from NZ! Alan

Fiona, LOVE that your 10 year old grandson is investing. That is amazing. WOW. What does he say? I am so intrigued.
Thank you so much for the ideas. I am adding them to the ideas list and working through it with Katie. THANK YOU. Sending happiness. Alan
Hello Kate and Alan,
I can’t wait to read your new book! I’m an avid reader of all things, from novels of historical fiction, suspense, romance and self-help to The Wall Street Journal, technical journals and research articles. I also pride myself on my editing skills and attention to detail, often catching the occasional error of a wrong word (that spell check doesn’t catch) a needed comma for clarity of sentence structure and would love to help as a pre-publishing reader. In fact, I couldn’t help but noticed that the lovely comment left by Katie xx above had a couple typos in the body of her letter.
Either way, Congratulations and I look forward to reading and applying the many financial freedom ideas provided. Thank you in advance.
Kind Regards,
Nancy N.
Nancy you are so kind and those skills are AMAZING. Those are skills I have never developed as well. I love the explaining the message and sharing the ideas and skills like yours can enhance it so much. I REALLY appreciate you replying and will take you up on that! It is a big project creating a book! Sending happiness. Alan
Quite Difficult to tick titles or put in alternatives as can’t see full screen if using mobile phone…had to keep turning phone on its side
Ann thank you for the feedback. I am so sorry. I only realised after a while and have now added a link to make it easier for people. Thank you for telling me. Alan
I like all the ideas above! To highlight the idea of being your own super hero, how about:
“The hero’s guide to personal finance: discover your super powers, grow your wealth and make the world a better place”
Or, “The extraordinary book of personal finance: unleash your inner hero and build the life of your dreams!”
And two more ideas but they don’t mention heros:
“Your greatest investment is you! Learn to make money, invest and live the life of your dreams”.
“When life gives you pineapples: 10 money lessons for a rich and happy life”
Congratulations Alan and Katie on writing the book. Can’t wait to read the first draft! :)
Bethany, these ideas are BRILLIANT. I had not thought of including the word extraordinary in the title at all! I love it. I am inspired and going to have a play! It also made me smile about the life gives you pineapples! you are amazing! Alan
Definitely include “Hero”. I love “whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right”🙏
we love that quote too! Thank you Dawn! you are fab!
Whatever you call it can’t wait to read it – in fact an audio book would be even better! Hope you decide to make one reading it yourselves. All the best Ellen
Ellen, thank you for your message! love this and YES we will record an audio book ourselves. That will be so much fun. We are excited to do it. Thank you for replying!
