Katie, when I first discovered the idea that we 0:088 secondscould buy our freedom, that we didn't have to go to work if we didn't want to, I was really up for that. That is right up my street. I didn't particularly like 0:1616 secondsmy job, it was okay, but the idea of travel and adventure and going and doing whatever I wanted with my time, I was 0:2424 secondsreally up for that. But there was also a part of me that wanted safety and not to be different and not to be compared and 0:3232 secondswanted to still be able to achieve and perform and I didn't want to be too weird. I was like people are going to think I'm weird. So outwardly I said yes 0:4242 secondsto this dream. I said yes to Alan. But inwardly I was screaming no. And that caused a lot of conflict and a lot of 0:4949 secondsconfusion for both of us because Alan would say okay like let's do it then like let's come up with a plan. let's go for it. And I said yes, but I thought no 0:5959 secondsand I pulled the handbrake. And Alan would say, well, like let's imagine our lives when we get to financial freedom and how we want to live and what we want 1:061 minute, 6 secondsto do. And a part of me was like, yeah, let's do it. And another part was like, no, this is weird. I don't deserve this. 1:131 minute, 13 secondsAnd pulled the handbrake again. It was very stop start with this driving with pulling the handbrake up every so often. 1:201 minute, 20 secondsUh, and I didn't really understand why I was doing that. I felt really conflicted and really confused. And then we realized that it was this old pattern 1:291 minute, 29 secondsthat was coming up, old training. It was great at helping me achieve. So, it was a great getting me to where I had got to at that point of being good at school 1:371 minute, 37 secondsand at work, but it wasn't really setting me up to be able to enjoy peace and freedom. 1:431 minute, 43 secondsAnd I didn't really understand what was going on. To me, it felt like sabotage because it felt like Katie said yes and 1:511 minute, 51 secondsthen distracted me, did other things, said no. And it caused huge conflict in 1:571 minute, 57 secondsour relationship for a long time. And I think that's actually how it is for a 2:042 minutes, 4 secondshuge number of people with money and with finances. They say, "Yes, yes, we want to fix our finances." But then part of them screams, "No, pulls on the 2:122 minutes, 12 secondshandbreak because they feel like it's too late. They feel nervous. They don't want to fail. There's so many stories that cause problems. 2:222 minutes, 22 secondsAnd today is about noticing those old stories and building a step towards where you might want to choose to go 2:292 minutes, 29 secondsdifferently instead. Because we're all where we are because of what we've been doing so far and it's got us to a certain point. But if you want to go 2:372 minutes, 37 secondssomewhere different, you might need to start thinking differently. But the good news is that training can change. The stories can change. And that's what 2:442 minutes, 44 secondstonight is all about because I was heavily trained. I talk about comparing the pineapples. I am the best at doing 2:532 minutes, 53 secondsthat. I'm trained myself not to. And why do you think I repeat it so much to everyone else? Because it's something that I'm learning to stop doing as well. 2:592 minutes, 59 secondsTrained to achieve. Trained that self-worth comes from performance and achieving and comparing. Very good at 3:083 minutes, 8 secondscomparing. Have I mentioned I'm good at comparing? So I was heavily trained and that's what we all happens to all of us in areas of our life and money of 3:173 minutes, 17 secondscourse. Money is such a big one and money training starts early. It's what maybe not this early but maybe it does. It's what your parents say to you. 3:233 minutes, 23 secondsIt's what you were told at school. That training starts very very early. And that training those beliefs are the the 3:323 minutes, 32 secondsseeds out of which grows your financial future. And in a very early age, you're 3:393 minutes, 39 secondsplanting those money seeds, those beliefs, the training, the action. That is what you plant. And that turns into your financial results in the future. 3:493 minutes, 49 secondsAnd your current results, they didn't come from nowhere. They came from those seeds. And some of them come from your family and what your parents repeated to 3:573 minutes, 57 secondsyou. Some of them come from school and teachers. Some come from work. Some come from the media and what gets repeated to us in adverts and commercials. Some from 4:064 minutes, 6 secondsgood stuff that's happened to you and you want to keep doing. Some from terrible, horrible circumstances and all of that comes together to give you the 4:144 minutes, 14 secondsresults that you have of your money tree. 4:164 minutes, 16 secondsAnd then the question is, how well did it grow? How well did it survive? Given the soil that you grew up in, given the 4:264 minutes, 26 secondsstorms you've weathered, given your financial situations, what have you ended up with? But it all comes from the 4:344 minutes, 34 secondsseeds that were set out to grow and whether you cared for the tree or not 4:414 minutes, 41 secondsand that you didn't choose all of those seeds. Some of them you inherited from the people around you. Some of them you just kind of landed with these seeds. 4:484 minutes, 48 secondsYou think where on earth did these come from? 4:514 minutes, 51 secondsWhat we really want to make clear is your money tree is not your worth as a human. You as a human are an incredibly valuable like you are an amazing human. 5:015 minutes, 1 secondWe all are. 5:035 minutes, 3 secondsAnd your money tree is not attached to your selfworth, but it is what has grown out of your beliefs. 5:105 minutes, 10 secondsYou know what's really cool though is whether you are pleased with the results of your money tree and how bushy and glorious it is or not. It's not fixed 5:195 minutes, 19 secondsbecause if that grew from seeds that were planted and you don't like how it is now, well, the good news is you can change those seeds. And that's what 5:275 minutes, 27 secondstonight's all about. And the interesting thing is if you prune back, well, nature grows even faster. And if you want a different future, well, plant different 5:365 minutes, 36 secondsseeds, create a different future, take different actions, because what got you here won't get you to where you want to 5:445 minutes, 44 secondsget to. And you might actually plant the seeds and be amazed at what grows out of what you're doing. 5:545 minutes, 54 secondsAnd that's kind of the visual representation of what you're planting. 5:585 minutes, 58 secondsNow, over the last couple of weeks, we've had quite a few different comments of when people look at the net worth tracker or the gap tracker, they they 6:066 minutes, 6 secondsfeel bad looking at the tracker. They look at the numbers, they create a story, and they feel bad. But what we wanted to say to you is the tracker is neutral. 6:166 minutes, 16 secondsIt's just ones and zeros on a screen. It's it doesn't have a 6:236 minutes, 23 secondsstory. It's not casting judgment. It's just a a picture, a snapshot of your finances. But people quite often feel good or bad based on what they look at. 6:376 minutes, 37 secondsIt's not actually the thing at all. It's nothing to do with the tracker. The tracker is that neutral inanimate object. I think spreadsheets are alive, 6:466 minutes, 46 secondsbut actually they're not. They're just a thing, but it's the story that you're telling about about the thing. So you look at the tracker and that's the 6:546 minutes, 54 secondstrigger. That's the inanimate thing you look at and then your head makes up the story. Oh, I'm behind. Oh, it's too late. Oh, this is confusing. Or maybe 7:027 minutes, 2 secondsit's, oh, I love spreadsheets. Stories can be positive, negative, neutral. Actually, neither positive or negative. They're just the results that you get. 7:107 minutes, 10 secondsAnd are you happy with those results? 7:117 minutes, 11 secondsAre the stories that you're telling yourself about these neutral things getting you to where you want to be with your money tree? And the interesting 7:197 minutes, 19 secondsthing is two people can look at the same outcome, the same number, and have two completely different stories. One person can see a thousand written on their 7:287 minutes, 28 secondstracker and feel behind, feel despair, feel as though it's all falling toart. 7:347 minutes, 34 secondsAnd another person could see a thousand and say, "Well, at least I'm not in debt." Like, I'm on path. I've got a good building point. And you can have 7:437 minutes, 43 secondsthe same number but two completely different stories from it. 7:487 minutes, 48 secondsSo if it's the same number, maybe it's not money's fault. Maybe it's not money that's making you feel that way. And 7:577 minutes, 57 secondsactually, we've crossed out maybe it's not. It's the story. It's the things that you're thinking about. 8:028 minutes, 2 secondsMoney doesn't have a personality. Money doesn't judge you. It's just a thing. 8:068 minutes, 6 secondsAnd it's the stories we make up about the thing that cause us the problems. 8:118 minutes, 11 secondsNow, one of the questions that has helped us hugely in our lives is when we feel 8:188 minutes, 18 secondsupset, down, sad, frustrated, we ask the question, "What do I have to believe to 8:268 minutes, 26 secondsfeel this way?" And it is an incredibly powerful question to help uncover the beliefs that trap you. So, if throughout 8:348 minutes, 34 secondstonight you feel frustrated, annoyed, you go, "Those donigans, I'm done with them." 8:408 minutes, 40 secondsWhat do you have to believe to feel that way? 8:458 minutes, 45 secondsShouldn't have laughed when you said I'm turned on again. Just felt a little bit abrupt like just turning off. But look, if you look at these things and you feel 8:548 minutes, 54 secondsdown or ashamed or bad about what you see, then of course it makes sense to avoid. Of course, the head in the sand 9:029 minutes, 2 secondstechnique makes sense because if you have the story, well, whenever I look at money, I look at my numbers or look at my bank balance, I feel down. Of course, 9:109 minutes, 10 secondsyou're going to stop looking. It makes absolute sense. But the key thing here is here is that it has a cost. That avoidance has a cost. 9:199 minutes, 19 secondsIf you avoid discomfort tomorrow, uh, sorry, if you avoid discomfort today, well, that's what keeps you stuck 9:259 minutes, 25 secondstomorrow. The headin the sand strategy never works. 9:309 minutes, 30 secondsHowever, if you can accept the discomfort today and deal with it and take action anyway, well, that creates 9:389 minutes, 38 secondsgreater freedom tomorrow. And short-term discomfort, it's my favorite picture of Katie ever that I took this week for the 9:469 minutes, 46 secondsslides. Short-term discomfort over time can actually lead to progress in the meaning mean medium-term 9:549 minutes, 54 secondsand long-term happiness and peace. And I have this expression that your success in life is directly related to the 10:0310 minutes, 3 secondsamount of discomfort that you can deal with in the moment. If you can deal with it, talk about it, take action, you'll 10:1010 minutes, 10 secondscreate a brighter future. And actually, we we've said long-term peace and happiness on this slide. That's not something that's waiting for you once 10:1710 minutes, 17 secondsyou've got your money sorted and it's exactly the way you want it to be and your money tree is blossoming and it's all going well. Actually, some of that peace and happiness is available now. 10:2610 minutes, 26 secondsAnd as and that progress feeling of making progress is available now by taking those small actions that we have encouraged you to do so far through the freedom work and the ideas that we've shared. So you don't have to wait. 10:3810 minutes, 38 secondsYou can have those feelings but it might come with a little bit of discomfort and that's the two sides of the coin. 10:4510 minutes, 45 secondsEveryone likes to think they are partly Vulcan. They like to think I make decisions based on logic and maths. But 10:5310 minutes, 53 secondsin reality, it's the stories that drive these things. It's the stories of investing is gambling. I'm too late. Cash is king. 11:0411 minutes, 4 secondsCash is safe. I'll mess it up. Don't do it. The stories drive our decisions, not the maths. 11:1411 minutes, 14 secondsAnd in week one, we talked about the gap between what you earn and what you spend. In week two, we talked about your financial blue dot and looked at your 11:2211 minutes, 22 secondsnet worth and what you have based on your life so far. But if all of your old stories get you in the way of looking at 11:3111 minutes, 31 secondsthese things, make you avoid the looking at the gap, make you avoid looking at the net worth tracker, make you avoid taking the next step, then all those 11:3911 minutes, 39 secondstools, all those spreadsheets, all those things are pointless. And it pains me to say this and it took me a long time to 11:4611 minutes, 46 secondsget to this place, but the numbers, the spreadsheets, the figuring out the strategies, what do I do with my gap and knowing that and having that knowledge 11:5511 minutes, 55 secondsis actually a very small part of how what it means to make progress. If you have the map that we shared with you uh 12:0312 minutes, 3 secondsin weeks one and two, but you're not going to follow it, then the map is pointless. And that's what today is about. It's 12:1212 minutes, 12 secondsremembering what I have learned which is that this is the most important element of all of this because you can have the 12:1912 minutes, 19 secondsbest strategy, the best plan, but if part of you is pulling the handbreak then it's pointless. Change the story, 12:2612 minutes, 26 secondschange the results. And I just wanted to reassure you, you were trained heavily 12:3412 minutes, 34 secondsby your parents, by society, by your family, and so was everyone else. You are not alone. This is literally what 12:4212 minutes, 42 secondsthe world has done to us is trained us to think a certain way and we come along 12:4912 minutes, 49 secondsand say do the opposite of what society teaches you to do. And of course there's going to be uncomfort and discomfort in that. And look, we're not vilifying anyone. 12:5712 minutes, 57 secondsWe're not saying your parents were bad or wrong. We're all doing the best that we can. But perhaps they inherited unhelpful money beliefs from their parents or things that happened to them. 13:0713 minutes, 7 secondsNo one is bad. No one is wrong. It's just a time to examine whether those beliefs are serving you. Now, now before we move on, a quick message 13:1613 minutes, 16 secondsfrom our lawyer, Katie, lawyers, this is not financial advice. We're not trained financial adviserss. We're not regulated. Where are we? 14:1414 minutes, 14 secondsWe are on week three. So, these first three weeks of the course are the foundations of everything that follows. 14:2014 minutes, 20 secondsSo, we've looked at where your money goes in week one. We looked at how much you have in week two. And now we're looking at what you believe about money. 14:2714 minutes, 27 secondsThese are fundamental to everything that we talk about. And actually today's stuff might unlock you to go back and look at weeks one and two and what 14:3614 minutes, 36 secondsperhaps you might have avoided looking at because of some of these old stories that might be coming up. And I spotted this comment today on YouTube. The value 14:4514 minutes, 45 secondsof the reconnaissance missions. Uh, one of the watchers says, "I just found three of those millions of lost pensions 14:5314 minutes, 53 secondswas totally worth the headache to find 40,000 that I literally didn't know I had." Well, that's unbelievable. 15:0215 minutes, 2 secondsJust do the reconnaissance and the homework. There might be free money waiting for you. Now, the plan for today, by the end of today, we want you 15:1015 minutes, 10 secondsto have a simple strategy to help tackle old stories and beliefs. That's it. 15:1715 minutes, 17 secondsBecause we all have stories. You're not the only one. This map represents all the different places that we have people 15:2415 minutes, 24 secondscoming from. We've got 91 countries represented. But we're all human. We all have similar struggles and stories around money. I appreciate there's, you 15:3215 minutes, 32 secondsknow, obviously very different ways that we grow up, but the stories that we have are surprisingly similar. It's all just 15:3915 minutes, 39 secondspart of this human experience. So, no matter where you are on the planet, you got these same stories. You're not alone. And that's why we're all here working on this together. 15:4815 minutes, 48 seconds10,000 of you filled out the precourse survey, which we analyzed and looked at and read. And in general the what you 15:5615 minutes, 56 secondstold us was that you're arriving at this course overwhelmed late I feel like I'm late to this 16:0416 minutes, 4 secondsknowledge and what if I make a mistake a fear of what could go wrong and that's how people arrive at rebel finance 16:1316 minutes, 13 secondsschool and you told us actually you don't necessarily want to be rich whatever that means to you but actually you just want peace calm and a plan 16:2316 minutes, 23 secondswhich is really interesting to know that, you know, we're not here to get rich, whatever that means. We're not here to get wealthy necessarily. We're here to make progress and to feel 16:3216 minutes, 32 secondsconfident and calm and secure with our money. 16:3516 minutes, 35 secondsBut there are old stories running the group and we did the belief survey in the pre-course questionnaire and these are the top five beliefs that we as a 16:4416 minutes, 44 secondsgroup have. Uh number one, it takes money to make money. That's one of the top belief that the group holds. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer. 16:5416 minutes, 54 secondsYou may have heard of these before. You may have had your parents tell you them or repeat them to you. Uh, number three, 17:0117 minutes, 1 secondmoney is a limited resource, which includes a deleted bit of I don't have much. 17:0717 minutes, 7 secondsNumber four, realistically, chances are I will never be rich, which quite often includes a deleted bit which says, well, I'm not rich, so I 17:1617 minutes, 16 secondsshould give up. And then the final one, a really big one, is it's too late for me. That's overwhelmingly what people say it to us. 17:2717 minutes, 27 secondsAnd those are the stories. 17:2817 minutes, 28 secondsExactly. And we're not here to take away any of your stories or your beliefs if they're working for you. But the big question here is, are you happy with 17:3617 minutes, 36 secondsyour results? Are you happy with the lushness of your money tree? Are you happy with the fruit that it's bearing? 17:4317 minutes, 43 secondsIf yes, great. Keep the old story. It's working for you. Do you like where you've got to keep those seeds? Keep tending to your tree and keep working on 17:5017 minutes, 50 secondsit. If no, perhaps it's time to change those seeds. Perhaps it's time to put the belief or the story on trial. And 17:5917 minutes, 59 secondsthis week in the Facebook group, we had a post of someone saying every time the Donigans say scan a QR code, download a 18:0718 minutes, 7 secondsspreadsheet, they felt bad, they felt behind, they didn't like tech, and the trigger was us talking about tech, but 18:1718 minutes, 17 secondswe don't know what the story is that the person had. And we can kind of guess it's probably, oh, I'm not good with tech or I'm behind or this is not 18:2618 minutes, 26 secondsdesigned for me. But the trigger is some words from us and then the story appears in your head. And what we want to say to 18:3518 minutes, 35 secondsyou all is if you ever feel triggered, ask what do I have to believe to feel this way? Because you may feel 18:4318 minutes, 43 secondschallenged tonight, which is good. If you do ask, "What do I have to feel to believe this way?" 18:5318 minutes, 53 secondsQuick question in the chat. Are those baby pictures of people of the babies holding money and having a watch and being thrown by money? Is that you? 19:0119 minutes, 1 secondNo, my mom did not take any pictures of me with cash when I was young. Sad. 19:0519 minutes, 5 secondsUh, okay. So, these are the five stories that are running this. Uh, the question is, how did these beliefs become so 19:1419 minutes, 14 secondsstrong that we believe they're true that we defend them, that we argue for them, that these are the stories that drive 19:2219 minutes, 22 secondsour life? Well, there's a lot going on in the world, isn't there? There's a lot of information coming into our brains at any one time. There's only so much our 19:3019 minutes, 30 secondspoor little brains can handle. And your brain kind of simplifies stuff down based on what it's heard, what it's seen, the common phrases that people 19:3819 minutes, 38 secondsrepeat to you that actually might not be the whole story. And that's what happens with stories about money. It's something that you've heard, you've repeated, and then you start collecting evidence for. 19:4819 minutes, 48 secondsYou keep strengthening that belief by things that you see will strengthen that. You just look for things that strengthen what you already believe and 19:5619 minutes, 56 secondskind of ignore the things that perhaps don't tie up with that. And that's how a belief ends up feeling like a fact 20:0420 minutes, 4 secondsbecause half the world says the rich get rich, the poor get poorer. And it's something we repeat. We look for 20:1120 minutes, 11 secondsevidence and we go, "Well, 97 people have told me that this month. It's been in the press. It's been here." And a belief is just a case that your brain is 20:2020 minutes, 20 secondsarguing for. It's presenting evidence to show you that this is true. And the evidence is scary headlines, family 20:2820 minutes, 28 secondsstories, mistakes, people telling you what to believe. That's the evidence. 20:3420 minutes, 34 secondsAnd look, some of this evidence is true, is real. Perhaps you're arriving and you do have debt, so it makes you feel like you are behind or you're starting late. 20:4320 minutes, 43 secondsyou're not quite as learned this information as early as you would have liked. Though there is some truth in these things and it's about separating 20:5220 minutes, 52 secondsthe facts from the fiction and about looking at the story that is attached to the facts and some of the evidence is 21:0021 minutesancient. A teacher said something to you 20 years ago, 30 years ago, but your brain is still acting as though it was 21:0821 minutes, 8 secondssaid this morning and it's true. or maybe it was passed down generation to generation. And some of these sayings, 21:1721 minutes, 17 secondsit takes money to make money was actually from a Roman playright. 21:2321 minutes, 23 secondsSo, we are dealing with a story or a belief that was created 2,000 years ago in a comedy and it's still hanging 21:3121 minutes, 31 secondsaround and we still repeat it to each other. And it was meant to be a joke, right? 21:3421 minutes, 34 secondsIt was actually meant to be a joke. It takes money to make money. But no one's laughing because now it's the truth. 21:3921 minutes, 39 secondssome evidence was handed to you from your parents of how they think about money, what they feel about money, and what gets repeated to you. 21:4721 minutes, 47 secondsMaybe your parents sat you down in front of a a whiteboard and said investing equals gambling. Probably wasn't in front of a whiteboard. It was probably 21:5421 minutes, 54 secondsat a family dinner with a story about how Aunt Mabel lost all her money. But that's what you're taught. 22:0122 minutes, 1 secondAnd one of the really useful ways of uncovering what you might believe about money is to think back to what your parents taught you about money. what 22:0922 minutes, 9 secondsphrases they repeated. Your parents or whoever raised you, what did they repeat about money? What did they keep saying? 22:1622 minutes, 16 secondsThat's such a wealth of place to look to know what you believe about money and what might still be running your life today. 22:2422 minutes, 24 secondsAnd we want to know, put it in the chat, tell us, put it in the comments on YouTube. We want to know, what did your parents teach you? Did they teach you 22:3322 minutes, 33 secondsnot to go into debt? Like, that's a fantastic one. Did they teach you to buy as big a house as you can like my mom taught me? 22:4122 minutes, 41 secondsYeah, my parents taught me uh live within your means, meaning don't spend more than you earn, have a positive gap, 22:4822 minutes, 48 secondsand pay off your credit card in full every month. So, don't go into debt. And those are really helpful things that they taught me. And there's also a bunch 22:5622 minutes, 56 secondsof other things in there that was not so helpful. remember the story when my dad we were driving down the street with the 23:0523 minutes, 5 secondsreally fancy houses and I was I used to be really enjoy looking at so nosy I used to really enjoy looking at the different houses and thinking oh maybe I could live there one day and I said oh 23:1423 minutes, 14 secondsdo you think I could live in a house like that and my dad said well if you marry a rich man I was like what luckily I was outraged and my mom was in the car 23:2123 minutes, 21 secondsas well and I was like you can't say that of course I can achieve what I want to achieve as a woman I don't need a wealthy man to jump in and actually I'm 23:2923 minutes, 29 secondsglad this guy wasn't didn't have any money when I met him. I didn't marry a rich man. So, yeah, it's really interesting just these throwaway 23:3723 minutes, 37 secondscomments. Like, who knows? My dad could have been joking. He could have meant it. He could have not meant it. But it's amazing how these throwaway comments you can latch on to and start to define us. 23:4623 minutes, 46 secondsLuckily, that's one of the few times where I didn't just I'm very compliant or I was. I would just be like, "Okay, whatever you say, parents." Luckily, I rejected that one. 23:5623 minutes, 56 secondsAnd building on that, this is the message we really want you to hear. You are not responsible for the programming your parents gave you as a kid. 24:0524 minutes, 5 secondsHowever, you are 100% responsible for changing it as an adult. And that's the 24:1324 minutes, 13 secondsbit that we really want you to understand is just because you were taught it as a kid doesn't mean it has to control your life today. You can change that. 24:2124 minutes, 21 secondsAnd actually, there's a subtlety in there as well as to looking at everything that they gave you and saying, "What do I want to keep?" Because there will be useful stuff in there. And what do I choose to reject? 24:2924 minutes, 29 secondsAnd you went through that exercise a lot, didn't you? 24:3124 minutes, 31 secondsA huge amount. My dad gave me many triggers to think about what he taught me. Uh, moving on, you can then start to 24:3824 minutes, 38 secondsbreak the cycle because if these beliefs are passed generation to generation, well, you can break the cycle for the next generation, you can stop these messages being passed on. 24:4824 minutes, 48 secondsSo, coming back to this idea of evidence. So, some of that evidence is real, some of it is ancient, some of it was given to you. Some evidence is not 24:5624 minutes, 56 secondseven evidence. Some of the stuff your brain just makes up to defend the old story. You'll be amazed how far I do 25:0325 minutes, 3 secondsthis all the time, how far my brain goes to keep hold of that old story and invent stuff to back it up. 25:1025 minutes, 10 secondsAnd if you want to see this at work, look up any news article that mentions us and see what people make up about us 25:1725 minutes, 17 secondsin the comments. It is unbelievable what they say. Here's two comments uh from this article. Uh, one was, "I guarantee 25:2525 minutes, 25 secondsyou they didn't do this alone. They probably had wealthy relatives." What story is this person defending with 25:3325 minutes, 33 secondsthis comment? They're probably defending that it's not possible for other people. 25:3825 minutes, 38 secondsor this one. These people conveniently left out the trust fund and bank of mom or dad and people like to sort of 25:4625 minutes, 46 secondsproject onto us their reasons why they couldn't do it cuz their brains have the story as to 25:5325 minutes, 53 secondshow it's possible to get ahead and then when we don't fit into that story they make that stuff up, don't they? 25:5925 minutes, 59 secondsUh so we are now doing something that we have never done before. Uh we are going to have a mini court case. Yes, I 26:0826 minutes, 8 secondsbrought a judge's wig for the court case. So, welcome to the court case. We have a gavvel. It's a great mullet. 26:1526 minutes, 15 secondsUh, thank you very much. It's actually like one of those hair things. Anyway, uh, court is in session. Uh, today's 26:2126 minutes, 21 secondsmini case is the people versus the Donigans. And the people claim that the Donigans must have had a secret 26:3026 minutes, 30 secondsadvantage and therefore financial freedom does not work for normal people. 26:3626 minutes, 36 secondsUh, madame prosecutor, I am the prosecutor. Look, this is official. I have my notes as to people versus the donigans. The prosecution 26:4326 minutes, 43 secondssubmits that Allan and Katie could not possibly have created financial freedom by learning, saving, investing, 26:5126 minutes, 51 secondsfrugality, teamwork, and several years of refusing to turn the heating on unless Alan's mom was visiting. There must be a hidden reason as to how this was possible. 27:0027 minutesStrong opening, mildly insulting. Proceed. 27:0427 minutes, 4 secondsExhibit A. Your honor, hidden help. They must have inherited it. Trust fund, bank of mom and dad, wealthy relatives, I 27:1227 minutes, 12 secondsdon't know, secret treasure chest. Maybe Alan found pirate gold in bathing so something. There must be some hidden thing. Do you have any evidence? 27:2027 minutes, 20 secondsNo, your honor, but someone online did feel very strongly about it. 27:2427 minutes, 24 secondsFeelings are allowed, but feelings are not evidence. 27:2827 minutes, 28 secondsThe prosecution had presented no bank statements, no witnesses, no documents, no treasure map, and no pirate gold. Just vibes. Strong vibes, your honor. 27:3627 minutes, 36 secondsVibes are not admissible. Oh, come on. Vibes are always admissible. 27:4027 minutes, 40 secondsFor the record, no windfall, no big inheritance, no secret trust fund. But more importantly, the claim arrived with no evidence. Rejected. 27:4927 minutes, 49 secondsNot possible. 27:5127 minutes, 51 secondsExhibit B. It's only because they do not have kids. 27:5927 minutes, 59 secondsThe tiny human argument. Does having kids change the numbers? Yes, of course it does, your honor. Of course it does. Children cost money. 28:0628 minutes, 6 secondsTiny humans are not free. 28:0828 minutes, 8 secondsNo. Apparently, they want food, clothes, shoes, school trips, hobbies, snacks, more snacks, and sometimes they want to go to university or college. 28:1628 minutes, 16 secondsDemanding little creatures. Does the fact that the Donigans don't have kids prove that the principles that they teach don't work at all? 28:2528 minutes, 25 secondsNo. You Does it prove you can't track your spending if you have kids? M. No. 28:3128 minutes, 31 secondsDoes it prove you can't build a gap if you have kids? No. 28:3328 minutes, 33 secondsDoes it prove you can't build off debt, build an emergency fund, learn investing, or improve your financial situation if you have kids? No. 28:4028 minutes, 40 secondsSo, what does it pro prove? 28:4228 minutes, 42 secondsI suppose it proves that the Donigan's numbers are not other people's numbers. 28:4928 minutes, 49 secondsSo, you don't need to copy the Donigan's life, but you can use the principles in 28:5528 minutes, 55 secondsyour life. M the court accepts that children change the numbers. The court rejects that if 29:0329 minutes, 3 secondsyou have kids, you should give up on your financial future. Exhibit C. The Donigans must be special. 29:1229 minutes, 12 secondsUh define special. 29:1529 minutes, 15 secondsUh unusual, different, weird, possibly not normal. 29:1829 minutes, 18 secondsOkay. The court will accept weird. The prosecution argues that if the Donigans did it, it must only work for a people exactly like the Donigans. 29:2729 minutes, 27 secondsUh, do people need to be the Donigans to improve their finances? No, your honor. 29:3229 minutes, 32 secondsDo they need to travel the world, be homeless and unemployed, refuse new clothes, and live exclusively on lentils? Suppose not. 29:3929 minutes, 39 secondsUh, do they need to become spreadsheet loving index fund reading Lego building financial weirdos? Not officially, your honor. 29:4629 minutes, 46 secondsWell, what do they need? I suppose when it comes down to it, they need to start where they are, learn the rules, create a gap, and take the first next step. 29:5529 minutes, 55 secondsExcellent. The court rejects I'm different from the Donigans, therefore I cannot start. 30:0130 minutes, 1 secondExhibit D. This is the strongest part of my case, your honor. No one taught me this. The people would like to present the case that they were let down by 30:0930 minutes, 9 secondseducation and therefore it is impossible to get ahead. And where was that comment written? under an article teaching it. 30:1830 minutes, 18 secondsAnd where are we tonight? On a course teaching it. 30:2330 minutes, 23 secondsAnd how much does Rebel Finance School cost? Nothing. Fascinating. 30:3130 minutes, 31 secondsBut that's how the mind works. It fills in the gaps and explains away what is written in the article. People 30:3930 minutes, 39 secondscan literally read an article that says, "Here's how they did it. Invest in an index fund. here's the exact index fund they did it with. Here's all of this. 30:4730 minutes, 47 secondsAnd the other person's brain will go, that's not possible for you. You can't do it. And it makes up reasons. Yeah. It makes up all these reasons. 30:5530 minutes, 55 secondsIt's to protect you from trying. That old story has given you some safety. 31:0031 minutesLike, well, if I keep holding on to the old story, I don't have to try. If I don't try, then there's no risk of failing. And then, you know, you're just 31:0831 minutes, 8 secondsstuck in that old story. It's amazing how much the brain makes up and it is unbelievable. 31:1731 minutes, 17 secondsWe've met so many people who've told us, "Oh yeah, I heard about this stuff years ago, but I didn't do anything about it." And the brain 31:2631 minutes, 26 secondsOh, clicked the wrong button. The brain ignores evidence that doesn't fit our existing stories and it creates 31:3431 minutes, 34 secondsevidence, fabricates evidence to back up what we already believe. We see that time and again in these news articles. 31:4131 minutes, 41 secondsYeah. So the question is, do you want to believe the old story or possibly change it? And what we wanted to do tonight was 31:5031 minutes, 50 secondsto put the five stories, the five beliefs that you have told us are the most prevalent in this group on trial. 31:5931 minutes, 59 secondsSo we're going to have an actual trial for these beliefs. That's the plan. 32:0332 minutes, 3 secondsLook, the key here is we're not putting you on trial. You see in this picture, go back in this picture. What is on trial? The belief. It's not you. It is 32:1232 minutes, 12 secondsthe belief. You are not in the dock. The belief is. 32:1532 minutes, 15 secondsAnd that is absolutely critical. As we go through this, uh, apparently we're getting a lot of comments coming in that 32:2132 minutes, 21 secondsmy wig needs trimming. Uh, that I look good with a fringe, which I'm not entirely sure. 32:2732 minutes, 27 secondsIt's a bit of a mullet motif going on, isn't it? 32:3032 minutes, 30 secondsBut we're going to move on. We're going back to You got to get in character. In character. Okay. Where's my outfit? 32:3632 minutes, 36 secondsWhy are you the only one who gets to wear a wig? And it is shedding already. 32:3932 minutes, 39 secondsThere's some like lovely little fringy bits going on. 32:4232 minutes, 42 secondsYeah, I'm not sure I'm happy to judge Allan. 32:4532 minutes, 45 secondsCourt is in session, ladies and gentlemen. Today's case, the people versus financial freedom. Financial 32:5232 minutes, 52 secondsfreedom stands charged, accused of being impossible for normal people. Before we 32:5832 minutes, 58 secondsbegin, let the record show you are not in the dock. The old stories are in the dock. And everyone watching this, if 33:0733 minutes, 7 secondsyou're watching now on YouTube, live catch up doesn't matter. You are the jury. Don't worry, there's no jury 33:1633 minutes, 16 secondspaperwork, no awkward sandwiches, and you can participate from your surf sofa. 33:2033 minutes, 20 secondsYour job is to listen to the evidence and decide whether the old story still deserves to run your financial life. 33:3133 minutes, 31 secondsYour honor, your esteemed honor. What is the thing that you meant to call judges? 33:3533 minutes, 35 secondsAnyway, your honor, your honor, I represent the old stories. Dangerous clients. Proceed carefully. 33:4133 minutes, 41 secondsThe prosecution will prove definitely that financial freedom is impossible, ridiculous, too late, too hard, only works for other people, and probably requires giving up biscuits forever. 33:5233 minutes, 52 secondsYes, for our international jury members, when we say biscuits, we mean cookies, not those weird scone things. A life without biscuits. Serious allegation. 34:0234 minutes, 2 secondsObjection. The prosecution is very pro- biscuit. 34:0534 minutes, 5 secondsNoted. The court is also pro biscuit, but biscuits are not evidence yet. Your honor, we have five arguments 34:1334 minutes, 13 secondsproving that the people watching should probably stop trying, close the spreadsheet, avoid the pension login, and go back to whatever they were doing before the Donigans showed up and started causing all this trouble. 34:2434 minutes, 24 secondsSo, your case is this feels hard, so I should give up. In legal terms, yes. 34:2934 minutes, 29 secondsExcellent. This is exactly the kind of story the court was created to investigate. Present your first argument, prosecutor. 34:3734 minutes, 37 secondsI've got some really strong stuff here. 34:3934 minutes, 39 secondsArgument one, it takes money to make money. If you have no savings, no gap, or you're in debt, clearly progress is impossible. Thank you very much. The 34:4734 minutes, 47 secondsprosecution rests already. 34:5034 minutes, 50 secondsYes, it's a very efficient prosecution, your honor, and it is the truth. 34:5334 minutes, 53 secondsWell, let's slow this down and let's examine it. Does having money help? Yes. Okay. Does having a gap help? 35:0235 minutes, 2 secondsYes. 35:0235 minutes, 2 secondsIs it easier to build wealth if you already have wealth? 35:0635 minutes, 6 secondsYes. I'm really glad you're helping me build my case here. Thank you very much. So, some of the evidence is real. 35:1235 minutes, 12 secondsYes. Case closed. Let's all go and eat biscuits. No. No. No. No. Not so fast. 35:1735 minutes, 17 secondsThe evidence says more money helps. The evidence does not say give up if you don't have any. Well, that was implied. your honor. 35:2635 minutes, 26 secondsBy whom? The story. Okay, let's ask a different question. 35:3135 minutes, 31 secondsDoes having no money today prove that I cannot start today? No, your honor. 35:3835 minutes, 38 secondsCan starting look like tracking your spending, finding one leak, listing your debts, putting one pound into an emergency fund, or coming to a free 35:4635 minutes, 46 secondsfinance course and learning the rules of the money game? 35:4935 minutes, 49 secondsThat's suspiciously specific, but yes, I guess so. Okay. So, what's the new verdict? 35:5635 minutes, 56 secondsIt helps to have money, but I can still start from where I am. 36:0036 minutesExcellent. Argument one, give up if you don't have money is overruled. Not sure how I feel about that. 36:0836 minutes, 8 secondsWell, you lost. 36:0936 minutes, 9 secondsOh, argument two, the rich get richer, the poor get poorer. People with assets get richer, people without assets get 36:1736 minutes, 17 secondsleft behind. There's no point. We should all just give up. 36:2136 minutes, 21 secondsOkay, that's a big argument. Let's slow it down. Do assets help people build wealth? Yes. 36:2736 minutes, 27 secondsDo investments, businesses, and properties have the potential to grow over time? 36:3236 minutes, 32 secondsYes. I'm glad you're helping me with my case. Thank you. So, there is some truth here. 36:3536 minutes, 35 secondsYes. We're on a roll here. Prosecution for the win. 36:3836 minutes, 38 secondsOkay. Careful. What conclusion are you asking the court to accept? 36:4336 minutes, 43 secondsIf you're not already rich, there is no point trying because the rich get richer, the poor get poorer. So, there's no point if I'm not already rich. 36:4936 minutes, 49 secondsThere it is. The old story has quietly added the second half. The rich get richer. And I am not rich, so why bother? 36:5736 minutes, 57 secondsDoes the fact that assets grow prove you can never own assets? No, I guess not. 37:0537 minutes, 5 secondsDoes it prove that the game is impossible? No. 37:0937 minutes, 9 secondsOr does it prove that learning how assets might work could be extremely valuable? Suppose so. 37:1737 minutes, 17 secondsOkay. Okay. So, if assets are making people richer, maybe the answer is not give up. Maybe the answer is learn what 37:2437 minutes, 24 secondsan asset is and buy one. Can someone start becoming an owner of assets without already being rich? 37:3137 minutes, 31 secondsOh, yes, they can. Okay. How do they do that? 37:3437 minutes, 34 secondsThey tune into week six, which is investing. New verdict. 37:3837 minutes, 38 secondsAssets produce income and grow. I can learn the rules and start becoming an owner of assets. Accepted. 37:4737 minutes, 47 secondsNow, members of the jury, uh that means you, the people listening, watching, uh 37:5437 minutes, 54 secondsquick vote in the chat. Is the rich get richer A reason to give up or B a reason 38:0238 minutes, 2 secondsto learn how assets work? So, type in the chat, A, it's a reason to give up or B, it's a reason to learn how assets 38:1138 minutes, 11 secondswork. That's what we actually want to know. 38:1638 minutes, 16 secondsThis is the interactive part of the course. Uh, please vote A or B now. We really want to know. 38:2338 minutes, 23 secondsLooks like the cherry's against me, your honor. You should present better evidence. 38:2838 minutes, 28 secondsOkay, speaking of evidence, this one is really strong. I'm really pleased with this one. My argument number three, money is 38:3538 minutes, 35 secondslimited. We've all seen this. You must have seen this even yourself. You're on a life's expensive. The bills keep coming. Food costs are going up, rents 38:4438 minutes, 44 secondsgoing up, mortgages going up, interest rates going up, everything just seems to cost more, and there's nothing left to work with at the end of the month. 38:5238 minutes, 52 secondsThe court accepts that life can at times be expensive, and the court accepts that the cost of living pressure is real. 39:0039 minutesOkay, so nothing can change. 39:0239 minutes, 2 secondsThere it is again. The evidence says money may feel limited today, but it does not say your options are limited 39:0939 minutes, 9 secondsforever. Yes, that was implied, your honor. By whom? The old story. 39:1739 minutes, 17 secondsCan you learn, ask for help, look for leaks, explore earning more, and direct the money you do have more intentionally? Yes, I suppose so. 39:2539 minutes, 25 secondsCan you take one small step even if the whole thing is not fixed today? Yes. Okay. So, what's the new verdict? 39:3339 minutes, 33 secondsMoney may be limited today, but my options don't have to be accepted. 39:4039 minutes, 40 secondsYour honor, the prosecution requests permission to approach the branch. Uh, permission granted. This is not going as well as I hoped. 39:4839 minutes, 48 secondsWell, that's what happens when your evidence is mostly panic and biscuits. Just break character at a moment. 39:5539 minutes, 55 secondsThere's something I want to address in the comments. People are like, "This is a bit random and a bit of an odd session. What's going on here? Why are 40:0240 minutes, 2 secondswe talking about this? Why is mindset so important?" Well, it's interesting. The beliefs or the stories you have directly impact the 40:1040 minutes, 10 secondsresults you have. And what you believe determines what you will do each day. How you will take 40:1840 minutes, 18 secondsaction. How you do things. And for quite well for everyone, what you believe determines what you will do today. What 40:2740 minutes, 27 secondsyou do today is your actions that compound over time to create your financial results. And that's the money 40:3440 minutes, 34 secondstree we were talking about earlier on today. And these beliefs that the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, money 40:4140 minutes, 41 secondsis a limited resource. It takes money to make money are the beliefs that you are planting day by day that grow into your 40:5040 minutes, 50 secondsfinancial results. And that's what we're trying to do is challenge 40:5740 minutes, 57 secondsthose beliefs because if you come to a new belief that maybe actually assets 41:0441 minutes, 4 secondsare important and I can start because you could own an index fund. You could start buying an asset with as little as 41:1241 minutes, 12 seconds$100 or £100. You could start today and if you've done the different weeks and you've created a gap, you've started 41:2041 minutes, 20 secondssaving some of that money. Well, you'll be able to start investing and all of a sudden assets are working for you, not 41:2841 minutes, 28 secondsagainst you. Like, they're never working against you. It's just other people own them and you don't. So, let's change that. And that's the whole purpose of this. 41:3641 minutes, 36 secondsYeah. We're doing it in a humorous way because one way of smashing beliefs that are holding you back is to start to be able to make a little bit of fun of 41:4541 minutes, 45 secondsthem. See the humor in them and then the power that they have over you can start to disintegrate and maybe even evaporate. So that is why we're going 41:5341 minutes, 53 secondsthrough one by one these beliefs that really hold people back and present the evidence, present a different way of thinking that might start to release you 42:0242 minutes, 2 secondsand to be able to have different results with your money. 42:0442 minutes, 4 secondsExactly. And a comment coming in. Peter and Hannah says, "This is beautifully bonkers." Yes, welcome to our world. It 42:1142 minutes, 11 secondsis slightly bonkers. So, let's bash the last two going back to the court case. 42:1642 minutes, 16 secondsUh, and then we will move forwards. Uh, madame prosecutor. Oh, madam. 42:2242 minutes, 22 secondsArgument four. Realistically, chances are I will never be rich. 42:2842 minutes, 28 secondsUh, before we go any further, define rich. Objection. That feels inconvenient. 42:3442 minutes, 34 secondsoverruled define rich you know the normal staff private jet yacht mansion gold toilet butler named 42:4142 minutes, 41 secondsJeves probably a dragon so the prosecution is arguing that if people cannot have a dragon they should give up improving their finances 42:5042 minutes, 50 secondswhen you say it like that it does sound a bit weird and a bit less compelling exactly most people here actually 42:5842 minutes, 58 secondsdo they need I think what you're asking me Alan is do most people need to become rich to improve their lives? 43:0443 minutes, 4 secondsThat's what I'm asking you. Do most people need to become rich to improve their lives? No, I guess not. 43:0943 minutes, 9 secondsDo they need a gold toilet to feel calmer about money? No, your honor. 43:1343 minutes, 13 secondsDo they need a yacht to build an emergency fund? No. 43:1643 minutes, 16 secondsDo they need a dragon to open a pension login? 43:1943 minutes, 19 secondsProbably not, but it might help with motivation if the fire is like getting them. Noted. 43:2743 minutes, 27 secondsSo, what is a better question? I guess a better question is what people actually want, which is peace, calm, confidence, security, and a plan. 43:3943 minutes, 39 secondsSo maybe rich is the wrong target. Yeah, I guess it is, your honor. Okay. So, what's the better question? 43:4643 minutes, 46 secondsWhat would enough look like for me? Okay, new verdict. 43:5243 minutes, 52 secondsI may not need to be rich with a gold toilet. I actually need to build enough and I need a simple plan to follow. 44:0044 minutesAccepted. The court welcomes enough. 44:0444 minutes, 4 secondsMembers of the jury, quick vote in the chat, please. When an old story says therefore give up, what should we do? A 44:1444 minutes, 14 secondsgive up. B. Examine the story. C. Eat biscuits and then cross-examine the 44:2344 minutes, 23 secondsstory. What should we do? Please put it in the chat now. A, give up. B, cross-examine the story. C, eat biscuits and then cross-examine the story afterwards. 44:3444 minutes, 34 secondsI'm seeing a lot of C, your honor. 44:3744 minutes, 37 secondsThe court accepts C, provided the crumbs don't interfere with the cross- examination. I just want biscuits now. 44:4444 minutes, 44 secondsFinal argument, and this is a biggie. It's too late for me. 44:4944 minutes, 49 secondsThe court recognizes that this one hurts. Proceed carefully, prosecutor. 44:5444 minutes, 54 secondsWell, actually, the evidence is overwhelming here. A lot of people with my story, this old story, say, "I should have started earlier. I don't have enough. Everyone else is ahead of me. 45:0445 minutes, 4 secondsRetirement feels really close, and I don't understand pensions, 401ks, Kiwi savers. I just don't get it." And your honor, my client once opened a pension 45:1245 minutes, 12 secondsstatement, became confused, closed it, ate three biscuits, and therefore we submit strongly and with great evidence that financial freedom is impossible. 45:2145 minutes, 21 secondsThat might be the most compelling bad argument the court has heard all evening. 45:2645 minutes, 26 secondsThank you, your honor. Prosecution rests. Uh, denied. Let's crossexamine. 45:3445 minutes, 34 secondsEvidence one. I should have started earlier. True. Many people wish they'd started earlier, but does wishing you 45:4145 minutes, 41 secondsstarted earlier prove that you should stop now? No, your honor. 45:4645 minutes, 46 secondsEvidence two. I don't have enough. Does not having enough today prove you cannot improve tomorrow? No. Proves we need a plan. 45:5445 minutes, 54 secondsOkay. Evidence three. Other people ahead. Is comparison a retirement plan? 46:0146 minutes, 1 secondNo. It's mostly a way to feel actually really terrible while looking at other people's LinkedIn updates and how juicy their pineapples are? The court strongly advises against this. 46:1046 minutes, 10 secondsOkay. Evidence four. I don't understand pensions. Does that prove you are incapable of understanding pensions? 46:1846 minutes, 18 secondsNo. I think what actually does prove is pension statements are guilty of crimes against plain English. Note to self, I'll bring that close to court at a later date. 46:2646 minutes, 26 secondsThe court would welcome that case. Evidence five, retirement feels close. 46:3046 minutes, 30 secondsDoes that make action more important or less important? I suppose more important. 46:3646 minutes, 36 secondsSo, what does the evidence actually prove? I wish I'd started earlier. That's true. 46:4146 minutes, 41 secondsAll I need now is a plan. I have something to learn and that taking action matters more, not less. Interesting. So, what's the new verdict? 46:5046 minutes, 50 secondsI can't change when I started, but I can change what I do next. 46:5546 minutes, 55 secondsAnd future me would much rather I started today than give up today. 47:0247 minutes, 2 secondsMembers of the jury, the court has heard five arguments against financial freedom. Has the prosecution proved that financial independence, financial freedom is impossible for all? 47:1447 minutes, 14 secondsPlease type A if you think Katie has proved financial freedom is impossible and uh financial freedom is guilty. 47:2247 minutes, 22 secondsPlease type B if that has not been proven or please type C if you feel give me a biscuit and let's end this skit and start the next step. 47:3547 minutes, 35 secondsWe want to know A financial freedom is impossible, B financial freedom is possible, or C, give me a biscuit and a 47:4347 minutes, 43 secondstiny next step. And please take off the wig wig. You look ridiculous. 47:4647 minutes, 46 secondsDoes look a bit itchy. I'm seeing lots of C's, Alan, coming up in the chat. 47:4947 minutes, 49 secondsI've got hair every take it off. 47:5347 minutes, 53 secondsUh members of the jury, the court has heard the five arguments against financial freedom. The like the final argument, the final verdict. The court 48:0248 minutes, 2 secondsdoes not find that financial freedom is easy. 48:0648 minutes, 6 secondsThe court does not find that the system is perfect. The court does not find that everyone starts from the same place. But 48:1348 minutes, 13 secondsthe court does find that the old stories have failed to prove you should give up. 48:1848 minutes, 18 secondsYou can start where you are. You can learn the rules. You can build a gap. 48:2148 minutes, 21 secondsYou can buy your freedom. You can take the next tiny step. When the biscuits come. 48:2948 minutes, 29 secondsCase adjourned. We are done with this wig. It's over. Look, I've got hair everywhere attached to me. I do not like 48:3848 minutes, 38 secondsthis. Okay, so that I think is possibly the craziest piece we have ever tried on the Rebel Finance School. What was the 48:4548 minutes, 45 secondspurpose? To try and tackle some of the beliefs, the stories, the statements 48:5248 minutes, 52 secondsthat stop people every ever making progress. That was the whole point of this. 49:0049 minutesAnd remember, we're cross-examining the story. This is not about you. And I hope you could see that in the way that we did it, that this is just stories that 49:0849 minutes, 8 secondswe've inherited, that we've been passed, that we've had seeds that have planted that have resulted in this. And that you don't have to keep them. And that one 49:1649 minutes, 16 secondsway of shifting these things is to crossexamine them. 49:2249 minutes, 22 secondsUh, and we have had a message come in from Tula from last year to say, "Stop moaning about the wig." Uh, so please 49:3049 minutes, 30 secondsabuse Tula in the comments. I did only have to wear it for 10 minutes and I am sweating heavily already. Right. If you 49:3749 minutes, 37 secondsfight for the old case, you get to keep the verdict. If you fight for the old case, you get to keep the verdict. 49:4449 minutes, 44 secondsAnd the big thing here is we're not asking you to lie to yourself. We're not asking you to leap from I'm behind to 49:5249 minutes, 52 secondsyay like I'm early and like your brain's going to reject that big leap. You just need to build a better case. And we're coming on to how you do that because 50:0150 minutes, 1 secondquite often people get argue about which belief is true. And we the Donigans don't care which belief is true. We care 50:0850 minutes, 8 secondsabout which belief which story helps you make progress. Because you could have the belief people are good or you could have the belief that people are 50:1650 minutes, 16 secondsgenerally bad. I'm sure you've got cases where people have treated you badly and evidence where people have treated you 50:2350 minutes, 23 secondswell. The question is which one helps you to have a happier life. 50:2850 minutes, 28 secondsAnd we don't want you to jump from an old belief that's been really strong and old story to the new one. We're going to get you to build a bridge. What is this bridge we're talking about, Alan? 50:3850 minutes, 38 secondsYes. What is a bridge, Katie? It is the stepping stone to start to shift that 50:4650 minutes, 46 secondsold story into a new story. And we'll show you what we mean by that and how you build that bridge to the new belief. 50:5450 minutes, 54 secondsAnd the way is questions are the answer. 50:5750 minutes, 57 secondsWe've got a set of questions for you to help you to shift and to build the bridge to the new belief. So the first question is what makes this feel true? 51:0651 minutes, 6 secondsIs to acknowledge that that has been the old story. This is not a 14page legal case as to why it's true. This is a one 51:1351 minutes, 13 secondsor two line to just acknowledge and say, "Okay, this is where this is how I've ended up here." Step two, what is the impact or cost of continuing to believe the old story? 51:2651 minutes, 26 secondsWhat will this cost me in my life? And that's the motivation. That's the impact. That's the impetus to change. 51:3351 minutes, 33 secondsThe third question is the chance to cross-examine and ask, is it always true? And we're about to go through an example that is going to bring this to life. 51:4051 minutes, 40 secondsAnd then the final step is what's the bridging belief. So jumping from I'm bad with money to what's the new belief. 51:4951 minutes, 49 secondsFunny you should say that Alan. The example is I am bad with money. So let's show you how you build that bridge. So you're on one side of this chasm looking 51:5851 minutes, 58 secondsacross longingly at believing something else and the old belief is I'm bad with money. So that first step is to acknowledge what makes it feel true. 52:0652 minutes, 6 secondsWell, I was never taught. How am I supposed to be good with money if I was never taught? Money, whenever I think about it, feels scary, confusing. 52:1252 minutes, 12 secondsTherefore, that's how I've ended up here. This is not a full defense of the old story. This is just acknowledging why it's there. Then you start to build 52:2252 minutes, 22 secondsthe belief bridge across. And the first part of building the bridge is the impact of that old belief. What does it 52:2952 minutes, 29 secondscost me? And that impact is the motivation. It strengthens your resolve to get across. And if you believe I'm bad with money, well, that's why people then avoid looking at their finances. 52:4052 minutes, 40 secondsYou can start to feel ashamed. It's like, I'm bad with money. I should be better than this. I feel ashamed about how I am. And start to stay stuck. And 52:4752 minutes, 47 secondsthe real big one here is you could be passing that belief on to the people around you. So, what is the impact that this is having on you, on your health, 52:5552 minutes, 55 secondson your relationships, on the people that you care about? And that's the fuel and that's the support that's going to help you move to the new bridge belief. 53:0453 minutes, 4 secondsThen we cross-examine. Is it always true that I'm bad with money? Well, you could say, I haven't figured this out yet. 53:1353 minutes, 13 secondsI'm starting to learn and I can take one small step each day or each week. 53:1853 minutes, 18 secondsAnd I'm starting to learn just opens the door to possible changes. And that's the key. I can take one small step to 53:2653 minutes, 26 secondsimprove my situation with money. I could ask for help in the Facebook group with the AI bot on the website with the 53:3353 minutes, 33 secondsninjas on the call. I could ask for help or I'm starting to make progress every single day and I do one small thing a day to move forwards. 53:4353 minutes, 43 secondsSo this is the part where you start to cross-examine it and see where it might not actually be true. And then the final 53:5053 minutes, 50 secondspart is to finish the bridge. And this is a bit you're not leaping to I'm excellent with money. I'm a financial whiz. I'm amazing with money because 53:5853 minutes, 58 secondsyour brain will reject that if it believes strongly that you're bad with money. But a bridge belief could be something like I'm becoming someone who handles money well. I'm in the process. 54:0954 minutes, 9 secondsI'm changing. And then that's something that your brain could accept more. Some alternatives. I'm learning how to handle money better. I can get better at this. 54:1854 minutes, 18 secondsJust something that steps towards the way that you want to be that your brain won't reject as completely false. 54:2554 minutes, 25 secondsAnd that's the full bridge. And what you then do is every small action you take 54:3154 minutes, 31 secondsis evidence for the new case. So just opening the net worth tracker and looking at it is evidence that you've 54:4054 minutes, 40 secondsstarted to take control of money or asking a question or just using one of the tools that we got on the website 54:4654 minutes, 46 secondsor finding one account or taking one small step. And we're using or here. 54:5254 minutes, 52 secondsIt's a menu of options. We're not saying you have to do all of them. And you'll notice you might be thinking, what's the next step? How do I vote for this new 54:5954 minutes, 59 secondscase? How do I collect the evidence for it? It's the freedom work that we've been given you. It's tracking your spending. It's filling in the net worth 55:0755 minutes, 7 secondstracker. Um, finding those old login, the old pensions, the old 401ks, the things that you don't know, gathering the information, these reconnaissance 55:1655 minutes, 16 secondsmissions that we've been talking you through. That's the that's the actions. 55:2155 minutes, 21 secondsThose are the small actions that you can take and some of them are bigger than others of course. Sometimes folding an old login a little bit overwhelming 55:2955 minutes, 29 secondsfinding an old pension but as we saw in the comment earlier that could be worth 40 grand to you. It's unbelievable what you can achieve if you just take the 55:3855 minutes, 38 secondssmall steps. And the idea is we're not jumping from I'm bad with money to I'm a financial genius. We're just making tiny 55:4755 minutes, 47 secondssteps and tiny progress. And we want to make it possible for anyone. Everyone should be able to take these small steps. That's the plan. 55:5655 minutes, 56 secondsAnd that bridge is a lot to hold in your head. So I have an a bridged version. 56:0256 minutes, 2 secondsSee what I did there? See what I did there? Oh, Wes and Kim are laughing at my joke. Yes, it's only Wes and Kim. Debbie didn't 56:0956 minutes, 9 secondssummarize. And it is. I used to tell myself fill in the blank. This one in this example is I'm bad with money. A 56:1856 minutes, 18 secondsmore useful bridge belief is I'm becoming someone who handles money well. And this week I'm voting for my 56:2656 minutes, 26 secondsbridge belief by and then you put the action in whatever that is for you. 56:2956 minutes, 29 secondsMaybe it's listing out my debts so I can see them clearly. And that's just summarizing that whole bridge. So it's something that you can have with you as you go because that bridge is quite a 56:3856 minutes, 38 secondslot. So let's summarize it down into an a bridged version that helps you to hold that and to know what your next step is. 56:4456 minutes, 44 secondsAnd we've had lots of good examples of that in the chat. We love seeing these. 56:4856 minutes, 48 secondsUh there's one person who said, "I'm good with money and I'm becoming someone who knows how to make my money make 56:5656 minutes, 56 secondsmoney." I love that bridge belief. Like I'm already good, but I'm learning how to make my money work for me, which is fantastic. 57:0457 minutes, 4 secondsNow, Katie, what is your favorite threeletter word? Not four letter, threeletter. 57:0957 minutes, 9 secondsUh people that have come on the course before, perhaps you can tell me. Do you remember what my favorite threeletter word is? Put in the chat. Tell me. Do you remember the word? Yes, I can see it 57:1857 minutes, 18 secondsin the chat. The word is yet. This one is so powerful. By saying, "I haven't figured it out yet. I'm not confident 57:2757 minutes, 27 secondswith spreadsheets yet." Just opens up the idea that change is coming, that it 57:3457 minutes, 34 secondsis even possible, and just gets you thinking, "Oh, yet okay, so things are going to change. I just haven't figured it out yet." Just there's so much possibility, isn't it? 57:4457 minutes, 44 secondsjust that one word. And I always tag that on to things that I find myself saying to me. I was like, I'm stuck and I don't know what to do. You go yet? 57:5257 minutes, 52 secondsHe's like, oh, I'm about to figure it out. Which actually brings us nicely on to what Karen said in the comments. For me, believing that I'm bad with money 58:0058 minutesjust meant that I did not know what to do and and how to go about doing this. 58:0858 minutes, 8 secondsNow, learning this and the course has been amazing for that. and she started to make progress, which is the whole point of this. We're going to do one 58:1658 minutes, 16 secondsmore quick example, which is, "It's too late for me." So, those of you who have caught yourself saying, "It's too late 58:2458 minutes, 24 secondsfor me. Save the others. This is for you." We hear that all the time, don't we? 58:2858 minutes, 28 secondsWell, I'm going to help my kids with this, but it's too late for me. This one's for you. So, the old belief is, "It's too late for me." Acknowledge that. Well, what makes that feel true? 58:3658 minutes, 36 secondsWell, I wish I'd started earlier and I regret some of the past decisions I've made with my money. We've all been there. 58:4258 minutes, 42 secondsThis is not a 14page monologue diet tribe as to why you should hold on to the belief. It's just acknowledging how you've got here. 58:5058 minutes, 50 secondsThen we start to build a bridge which starts with what's the impact or what's the cost. If I believe it's too late for me, well, that makes me want to give up. 59:0059 minutesIf I believe it's too late for me, well, I'm comparing myself to other people and feeling bad about it. It delays me taking action, 59:0759 minutes, 7 secondswhich is the real irony of this is like I'm running out of time. It's too late. 59:1059 minutes, 10 secondsWell, I'm going to delay. And the idea as well that you will lose hope. It's like, well, it's too late for me. 59:1659 minutes, 16 secondsThere's no hope in that in that sentiment, is there? And that's these are the fuel and the motivation to help to support that bridge. 59:2359 minutes, 23 secondsWhich brings us on to cross-examining. Is it always true? It's too late for me. 59:2959 minutes, 29 secondsWell, I have a question for you. Are you dead yet? 59:3559 minutes, 35 secondsI I'm not sure I like that Debbie nodded at that point. You're definitely not dead. I think it's just like wise words, Alan. Wise words. 59:4359 minutes, 43 secondsHopefully, you're alive. If you're not alive, we've got bigger problems than this. But the are you dead yet? Well, if you're not dead, then we can do something to improve your finances. We can take action. And that's the key bit. 59:5559 minutes, 55 secondsBut many times, people who say this are looking for permission to give up. 1:00:021 hour, 2 secondsThey don't actually want to create change. And I always ask, well, do you want to do something about it? And if you do, then we can do something about it. 1:00:101 hour, 10 secondsI've got something to add here, Alan. 1:00:121 hour, 12 secondsWe've got these two examples that we've been going through of I'm bad with money. It's too late for me. You can the purpose and what we're going to get you to do for your freedom work is to do 1:00:201 hour, 20 secondsthis for something that you believe that is holding you back. So, it might be something a bit more out there about money. might out there meaning not 1:00:281 hour, 28 secondsdirectly related to you is like rich people or people with money are greedy or money is evil and just causes 1:00:341 hour, 34 secondsproblems. It's the exercise is to take what it is that might be holding you back and we've got ideas for how to flush out what that might be and to do 1:00:431 hour, 43 secondsthat for you. So have that in mind as we go through this example as to what this might be for you because I know this isn't the same for everyone. And that's 1:00:511 hour, 51 secondswhat makes this so exciting that we've all got these wonderful stories in our heads to start to flush out and build a bridge. 1:00:591 hour, 59 secondsI have enjoyed seeing the reactions on YouTube and Facebook putting uh skull emojis after the are you dead. 1:01:061 hour, 1 minute, 6 secondsOh, suggesting that perhaps the answer is yes. 1:01:081 hour, 1 minute, 8 secondsSlightly concerning. Okay, going back to the example cross-examining, it's too late for me. 1:01:141 hour, 1 minute, 14 secondsSo, you can start to shift this by saying, well, is it possible to change what I do next? Yes, it is. I'm starting to learn. I'm starting to understand. 1:01:231 hour, 1 minute, 23 secondsSo, perhaps it's not too late because I am seeing changes already. 1:01:271 hour, 1 minute, 27 secondsI only compare me with me. I'll stop comparing to anyone else. And I will measure my progress. an action matters 1:01:351 hour, 1 minute, 35 secondsmore now than it did given that I feel like I'm running a crazy thing, isn't it? 1:01:421 hour, 1 minute, 42 secondsIt's too late for me. Well, that should mean it's more important to take action, not less, like not an excuse. Or the final one, future me would rather I 1:01:511 hour, 1 minute, 51 secondsstarted today and imagine you in 10 years, the person in 10 years would probably like you to get the heck on with it and start to take action. 1:02:001 hour, 2 minutesSo then the final step is to work out what the bridge belief is. So again, this is just something that steps you towards where you want to go. We're not asking you to leap that chasm. So it 1:02:091 hour, 2 minutes, 9 secondsmight be something like, I can't change when I started, but I can change what I do next. I love that. 1:02:141 hour, 2 minutes, 14 secondsSome other alternatives, my future can still get better from here. Starting now is better than giving up now, or I still have time to improve what happens next. 1:02:231 hour, 2 minutes, 23 secondsSo choose the one that resonates with you or come up with your own one. And then you take small actions towards it which is the evidence building the case 1:02:311 hour, 2 minutes, 31 secondsthat this is true. And you might find that pension value or open the net worth tracker or ask the community for help or find one account, take one small action. 1:02:411 hour, 2 minutes, 41 secondsAny of the freedom work we've talked about so far is showing that this new belief is what you're moving towards. 1:02:491 hour, 2 minutes, 49 secondsOh, speaking of people um starting that might have thought it's too late for them. So Steve said, "I came across the course last year at age 60. Did it got 1:02:581 hour, 2 minutes, 58 secondsmy ducks in a row and I'm currently 25,000 better off than before I did the course." Steve, that's wonderful. Thank you for sharing that. 1:03:051 hour, 3 minutes, 5 secondsGive Steve a round of applause. That is unbelievable. Like that that's the whole purpose is take action. Uh thank you 1:03:121 hour, 3 minutes, 12 secondsHaley for clapping. I watched I did see that made me very happy that you participated. Uh but that's the whole point is it's never too late to take action. Uh, which is fantastic. Okay. 1:03:241 hour, 3 minutes, 24 secondsUh, would you like to make the same joke again, Katie? 1:03:271 hour, 3 minutes, 27 secondsI've got a bridged version. Bridged version. 1:03:311 hour, 3 minutes, 31 secondsThat was a really bad loss. Okay. So, do you remember the format of this? So, it's I used to tell myself it's too late for me. A more useful bridge belief is I 1:03:401 hour, 3 minutes, 40 secondscan't change when I started, but I can change what I do next. And then, what are you choosing to vote for? What is the evidence that you're casting? This 1:03:471 hour, 3 minutes, 47 secondsweek I'm voting for my bridge belief by fill in the blank, finding the login details for an old account, opening up my spending tracker. Whatever it is, 1:03:551 hour, 3 minutes, 55 secondswhat are you doing to vote for that new belief? Then if the old story comes up again, we want you to listen to it and 1:04:031 hour, 4 minutes, 3 secondsgo fascinating. And then let's work to tackle it. Now this is where it comes in 1:04:101 hour, 4 minutes, 10 secondsfor you. What we want you to do is apply this methodology, this strategy to a 1:04:171 hour, 4 minutes, 17 secondsbelief that has held you back. If you don't know what that is, look for what annoys you during the next week and then 1:04:261 hour, 4 minutes, 26 secondsask the question, what do I have to believe to feel this way? 1:04:291 hour, 4 minutes, 29 secondsWhich is the step to choose that one old belief and to uncover it. That's one way of doing it. And we've got another way we'll just come on to in shortly. Step 1:04:371 hour, 4 minutes, 37 secondstwo is not to jump to build the bridge and to do those four questions that we just went through and for you to answer those and figure out the bridge. 1:04:471 hour, 4 minutes, 47 secondsThen step three, write out the abridged version, a short version. I used to tell myself a more useful belief is and this 1:04:541 hour, 4 minutes, 54 secondsweek I'm voting for that belief by that's it. 1:04:581 hour, 4 minutes, 58 secondsPerhaps we'll pause there for people to take a screenshot, take a picture of that as your homework. It will also be in the notes when we update them when I've written them. be watching on 1:05:061 hour, 5 minutes, 6 secondscatch up in a few weeks time. Hopefully, they've already been done. And then the second part of the homework, this is such a powerful exercise. One of our 1:05:151 hour, 5 minutes, 15 secondsfriends said that this is something that shifted his thoughts and unrooted so much stuff that he didn't realize he even thought, which is, it's going to 1:05:221 hour, 5 minutes, 22 secondssound weird. Stick with it. Write a letter to money. How can you write a letter to money? Is it going to write back? This is a bit weird. We just 1:05:301 hour, 5 minutes, 30 secondstalked about how money is an inanimate object. How might that letter start, Alan? And why is this so powerful? 1:05:351 hour, 5 minutes, 35 secondsIt will not write back, but it allows you to get out what's inside you. And you might start with, "Dear money, you've never been there for me. Every 1:05:441 hour, 5 minutes, 44 secondstime I need you, you disappear from my account. Like, we've got a terrible relationship. What kind of friend are you?" And then maybe you'll actually 1:05:521 hour, 5 minutes, 52 secondsrealize that, well, I've never there been there for money either. And it's really interesting. You might start with, "Dear money, I've got mixed 1:06:011 hour, 6 minutes, 1 secondfeelings about you and how you've treated me in my life." But get out what's inside you. And that is one of 1:06:081 hour, 6 minutes, 8 secondsthe ways that you can uncover the stories and beliefs that you have within this part and it is incredibly powerful. 1:06:171 hour, 6 minutes, 17 secondsSo there's two ways of finding out what these beliefs, what these stories might be. Number one, what do I have to 1:06:241 hour, 6 minutes, 24 secondsbelieve to feel this way? whenever something feels uncomfortable, painful, frustrating, sad, ashamed, whatever it 1:06:321 hour, 6 minutes, 32 secondsis. And then the second way is to do that letter to money. Uh we've had one comment come in that I really would like to read out, which is this is my third 1:06:401 hour, 6 minutes, 40 secondstime of doing the course and I have more than doubled my net worth in the last year and a half. Wow. 1:06:491 hour, 6 minutes, 49 secondsI'm kind of shocked by that. Amazing. 1:06:511 hour, 6 minutes, 51 secondsUm which just kind of shows follow the process. Thank you ninjas. 1:08:361 hour, 8 minutes, 36 secondsThe closing message for this week is what are you planting this week? 1:08:431 hour, 8 minutes, 43 secondsYour current financial results are what you've been planting in the future in the past that have manifested to this 1:08:491 hour, 8 minutes, 49 secondspoint. Well, you can start planting new seeds this week. You can take new action by planting one new belief, one small 1:08:591 hour, 8 minutes, 59 secondsaction, one piece of evidence. And that is how the new money tree starts to 1:09:051 hour, 9 minutes, 5 secondsgrow. That's how you create change in the future. 1:09:101 hour, 9 minutes, 10 secondsSo tonight we showed you how to build that bridge. And on Thursday we're going to help you get lined up. So running 1:09:171 hour, 9 minutes, 17 secondsover that bridge is easy and you'll be skippy skippily skipping along happily building your money tree and getting the 1:09:251 hour, 9 minutes, 25 secondsresults that you want in your life. The one thing I really would love you all to take away from this is if you change your beliefs and you change your story, you will change your results over time. 1:09:341 hour, 9 minutes, 34 secondsAnd that happened for both of us. That's exactly where we had to start. I had a 1:09:411 hour, 9 minutes, 41 secondshuge number of negative financial stories that were based on my family, my upbringing. 1:09:501 hour, 9 minutes, 50 secondsOne of the examples of that when I was younger, I always remember going for a Chinese meal 1:09:581 hour, 9 minutes, 58 secondswith my dad. Uh my dad was an interesting character. He was quite controlling. I really did not like what 1:10:071 hour, 10 minutes, 7 secondshe was doing in the meal. And I just wanted to pay for my part of the Chinese meal and leave. And I took 20 out of my 1:10:161 hour, 10 minutes, 16 secondswallet. I put it on the table and I was like, I'm going. And my dad picked up the money, threw it back in my face, 1:10:251 hour, 10 minutes, 25 secondsscreaming, you will never pay for something whilst I'm here. 1:10:291 hour, 10 minutes, 29 secondsAnd I ran out of that restaurant in tears. 1:10:351 hour, 10 minutes, 35 secondsAnd one of the beliefs that that created in me is that money causes problems 1:10:421 hour, 10 minutes, 42 secondsbecause money became such a negative thing in our household with my dad going bankrupt and all the fights it caused 1:10:491 hour, 10 minutes, 49 secondsand I had to work to change that belief within me for the results to change on 1:10:561 hour, 10 minutes, 56 secondsthe outside. So what I wanted to say to you all is change the beliefs that are inside you 1:11:041 hour, 11 minutes, 4 secondsand you will change the results. I can never change the story because that happened but I don't have the same emotion attached to it. I don't have any 1:11:121 hour, 11 minutes, 12 secondsfeelings of anger for it. It just happened. And at that moment I landed in a decision that money caused the 1:11:211 hour, 11 minutes, 21 secondsproblem. But it wasn't money. It was the people that caused the problem. So if you can change your belief, you will 1:11:281 hour, 11 minutes, 28 secondschange your results and you will change your future. That's what we truly want to say to you. Thank you for tuning in. 1:11:351 hour, 11 minutes, 35 secondsWe have absolutely love tonight and being with you. What an experience. What a wig. 1:11:411 hour, 11 minutes, 41 secondsWhat a wig. 71 minutes.
