It’s only 2 weeks till the launch of the World’s First Financial Independence Album. Yes you read that right. We (The Donegans) and our friend Finn have produced a 21 track, multi genre album all about financial freedom, making money, investing and compounding.

I know you were sceptical, how can you make a song about the 4% rule? How can you create a song about compounding and not have more layers of cheese than a deep dish Chicago pizza?

Is it possible to teach finance through music?

• 01 – First Dollar – Country – This is one of our favourite tracks and talks about making your first dollar, earning money and getting started.
• 02 – Earn and Invest – Pop Piano – Inspired by the Earn and Invest podcast with Jordan Grummet we wrote a song about earning as much money as you can and investing it.
• 03 – Rat Race Lies – Hip Hop – Ever felt like you are trapped in the rat race, working just to survive, never getting ahead? This is the song for you, maybe it will inspire you to apply what you learnt at Rebel Finance school and escape quicker!
• 04 – ChooseFI – Rock – Financial Independence is a choice. Yes you read that right, you get to choose and inspired by the ChooseFI podcast with Brad Barret we wrote a song all about choosing your direction, taking control and mastering your finances
• 05 – Create a Gap – Rock – This is the Rebel Finance School anthem. What else could it be other than about creating a gap between your income and spending and then investing that dough, watching it grow? Katie and I have been singing this song non stop sing we wrote it!

• 06 – Budget Blues – Blues / Jazz – Sometimes saving can be hard, you are screwing down your spending, working out where every pound goes and making it count. But is all this budgeting worth it?
• 07 – Breaking Free – 90s Soul R&B – It is difficult when you first get into financial independence, doing something different, standing out from the crowd. But if you don’t break free, if you don’t do something different you will get the same results as everyone else!
• 08 – Investing (Buying Back your Time) – Funk / Disco – A song about index investing? Who would have thought that index funds were so cool they have their own song. And it isn’t about the indexing, it is about the time you buy back to do as you want to.
• 09 – Compounding – Barbershop Quartet – When people first learn about financial independence they get scared off by the size of their target, they worry that they can ever earn that much. But you don’t have to earn it all, you can let compounding do the heavy lifting for you. Invest your money and let it grow! The most upbeat and fun track on the album!
• 10 – The Boring Middle – Acoustic – Katie wrote this song that speaks straight to the heard of the problem. People find out about FI, get excited but then can’t wait for the compounding to work. They call this period the boring middle, when your investments are on autopilot and you are just grinding it out. But is it really the boring middle?
• 11 – Buy Your Freedom First – Female Vocal Pop – Most people spend EVERYTHING they earn each month, maybe even more. What would happen if instead of buying more stuff you bought Freedom instead? You took the money you were going to spend in things and bought index funds that compound and grow to a point you never have to work again!? Next time you log into Amazon or go to the shops put this track on first.

• 12 – False Peaks – Dance Pop – It is a rocky road to financial independence, the stock market is volatile as we are finding out right now! Sometimes there are false peaks as you go along the road to freedom. This is the theme tune for those moments you just need to keep on going!
• 13 – 4% Rule – Soulful R&B – yes you read that right, the 4% song is an RnB track. Will 4% be enough to live off, will it get you through the market crashes, ups and downs and inflation? Will you survive.
• 14 – One More Year (No, No, No) – Alternative Rock – So many people end up working well beyond the money they actually need to retire out of fear. The real question is “Are you afraid of running out of money, or are you afraid of running out of life? If you are stuck working a job you don’t love this is your theme tune!
• 15 – Quit Like a Millionaire – Rock – Then comes the most delicious moment of all, you have invested enough to quit, you go into the office and tell them you are leaving to live your best life! Inspired by Kristy and Bryce from Millennial Revolution this is the song for living life differently, quitting the job and travelling the world!
• 16 – Money Taboo – 90s Hip Hop – It can be difficult to talk about money. In every country we have visited we find that families don’t talk about it, people are shy about sharing their numbers and money is a taboo subject! Katie and I have been trying to break the taboo by sharing our numbers online for the last 5 years, but it takes more than just us to break the taboo! Let’s start the conversation and remove the societal shame around money!

• 17 – FI is Better with Friends – Rock – What’s the point of all this if it isn’t to spend more time with the people you love! Financial Independence is better with friends. This work, this journey, this mission gives you the freedom to spend time with your family, your kids (if you like them) and your friends. Use your freedom to spend time with the people that really matter!
• 18 – FIRE Brigade – Indie Rock – We are an eclectic group of people. The FIRE Community is made up of entrepreneurs, property investors, minimalists, frugalists, index investors and more. We do have one thing in common! The desire to create the freedom to focus on what is most important. You are part of the FIRE Brigade!
• 19 – Finally Free – Slow Pop – Imagine the moment you quit your job, the 9-5 is over, the commuting is done and you are free from corporate meetings. This is the song that you need to play as you dream of the moment that is coming for you when you are free to live the life you want to lead! This is a moment Katie and I dreamed of for years!
• 20 – What Now? What Next? – Pop – So you have your freedom! What are you going to do with it. So many people pin their happiness on a number and it isn’t there for them when they get there. What are you going to do now you are free? How are you going to spend your time? What are you going to do?
• 21 – Badassity – Heavy Rock – The shockingly simple maths of early retirement is the article from Mr Money Mustache that inspired so many of us to get into financial independence. This is the song about independence, frugality, living free and badassity! You only get one life, live it completely and rock out to baddassity as you go!

21 songs, different genres and messages all about money. Our hope is that playing these tracks is going to get you humming along, inspire the people around you, create conversations about money breaking the taboo and more.

Can you imagine if your teenagers are singing along to the Earn and Invest Song in the back of the car as you drive? Or if you are playing the compounding song and your partner is dancing along with you? Or you play Buy your Freedom First and avoid making an unneeded Amazon purchase?

Katie and I are on a mission to help people with their finances. When I learnt about financial independence and saw what it did for our finances I became evangelical about it trying to persuade everyone to get on board.

No one really wanted to listen at that point so I started to run workshops and give them away. In the height of the pandemic in 2020 we created Rebel Finance School Version 1 and helped 135 people get on top of their finances.

In 2024 Version 5 of that course ran helping 15,000 people in 40 countries to get on top of their finances and start investing.

We still feel like we are scratching the surface though! With the book, the Music Album and the Course we are hoping that we can help more and more people to change their money habits, get to financial freedom and then come and hang out with us and do cool stuff together!

If we manage to sell 6000 copies of the album we would hit the Top 40! I was so out of date that I asked if that meant we would get on Top Of The Pops to talk about the album!? Younger trendier people told me Top Of The Pops ended a long time ago!

Put we would end up on Radio 1, the top chart shows and more talking about money, personal finance and the 4% rule song! Wouldn’t that be amazing to share the word of personal finance?

Who knows. Maybe we are dreaming, but I just want to find ways to help reach more people and help them avoid the money pit falls and live a happy free life.
